IRON SOLDIER (programming finished)

Hi!

As the game "Iron Soldier" is being programmed by German coders, I got
a very interesting text from a German net. It was written by somebody, who
I know and trust. He knows all the people, who are involved in the Iron
Soldier project and has first-hand information.
Unfortunately the text is written in German, but it says, that the game is
absolutely finished and is amazing. The game was shown on a German Atari
Fair called PROTOS and should be in the shelves in about two weeks. The people
at the fair sold 800 Jags in two days!!!

Here it goes:

PS: Unfortunately it doesn't say anything about the multi-player abilities of
Iron Soldier.

Auf der ProTos hatte ich die Gelegenheit, mir Iron Soldier von der deutschen
Firma Eclipse etwas genauer anzusehen. Erst einmal möchte ich Marc Rosocha,
den Chef von Eclipse, dafür danken, daß er mir sein Modul für die beiden Ta-
ge zur Verfügung gestellt hat. Sein Vertrauen hat mich sehr geehrt!

Ich konnte es kaum erwarten, die endgültige Version von Iron Soldier in mei-
nen Händen zu halten. Ich kenne dieses Projekt bereits seit Anfang 94 und
hatte zwischendurch auch mehrmals die Gelegenheit, diverse Testlevel zu
spielen. Besonders gespannt war ich aber auf die Präsentation und die ver-
schiedenen Missionen.
In Iron Soldier steuert der Spieler einen gigantischen Roboter durch feind-
liches Gebiet. Ziel des Spieles ist es, 16 Missionen erfolgreich zu über-
stehen. Zahlreiche Gegner versuchen alles, um dem eigenen Blechkumpanen
mächtig in's Getriebe zu spucken. Acht mehr oder weniger effektive Waffen
stehen zur Auswahl, allerdings nicht von Beginn an. Man startet ganz be-
scheiden mit einem kleinen Gewehr. Bessere Waffen wie zum Beispiel Granaten,
ein Maschinengewehr oder die beeindruckende Missile findet man erst später
im Game.
Anfangs hat man die Wahl zwischen vier Missionen und nur einer Waffe, einem
Gewehr. Erst wenn man diese vier Missionen erfolgreich beendet hat gelangt
man zu den nächsten vier (usw.). Im Spiel selbst hat mehrere Anzeigen, die
man nach Möglichkeit nicht aus den Augen lassen sollte. Links oben sieht
man seinen Roboter und die Positionierung der Waffen, die mitgeführt werden.
Auf der rechten Seite sitzt der Radar. Boden- und Luftziele werden verschie-
denfarbig angezeigt. Am unteren Bildrand befindet sich die Statusanzeige des
Iron Soldiers. Hier läßt sich ablesen, wie gesund man noch ist.
Waffen werden mit dem Nummernblock auf dem Jaguarjoypad gewechselt. Schüsse
feuert man mit der B-Taste ab. A in Verbindung mit UP oder DOWN auf dem
Steuerkreuz führ zu Geschwindigkeitserhöhung bzw. -reduzierung. An die Steu-
erung muß man sich natürlich erst einmal gewöhnen. Dies fällt aber nicht all-
zu schwer.
Direkt zu Beginn springt einem die außerordendlich gute Grafik in's Auge.
Hierfür zeichnen sich Grafiker verantwortlich, die sich bereits in der Demo-
szene auf Atari und Amiga einen guten Namen gemacht haben und zur Elite ihres
Faches zählen. Die Rede ist unter anderem von McFly und Cugar.
Auch der Sound kann überzeugen. Die FX klingen sehr realistisch. Die angrei-
fenden Hubschrauber hören sich wirklich extrem echt an. Sechs Musikstücke
plus Titelmusik begleiten den Spieler durch die verschiedenen Missionen.
Die besagte Titelmusik stammt direkt von Atari, die In-Game Musik kommt von
einem deutschen Programmierer. Keine Angst, die Stücke klingen toll und sind
wesentlich abwechslungsreicher als die Songs in Tempest 2000. Jetzt sollte
niemand mehr behaupten, der Jaguar hätte Probleme mit dem Sound!
Die Vectorgrafik im Game läuft auf RGB-Geräten mit einer maximalen Framerate
von 30 Frames, auf Pal-Konsolen mit 25 Frames. Selbst wenn es heiß hergeht
und Ihr eine ganze Reihe von Häusern zur gleichen Zeit dem Erdboden gleich
macht stellt man kaum einen Geschwindigkeitsverlust fest. Besonders beein-
druckend sind die Explosionen der Hochhäuser. Diese zerfallen nämlich in
unzählige kleine Würfel. Sehenswert!!!
Schießt man eine Missile ab, so wechselt die Ansicht. Ihr sitzt plötzlich
auf der Spitze der Rakete und könnt diese genau in's Ziel steuern. Hier wird
die Geschwindigkeit von Iron Soldier so richtig deutlich. Nach dem Einschlag
der Missile wechselt die Kammera auf eine Totale. Ihr könnt Euch dann in
aller Ruhe das Ausmaß der Zerstörung ansehen.
Natürlich haben Marc Rosocha und Michael Bittner auch Cheats eingebaut.
Selbstverständlich werde ich darüber nichts verraten (kann ich auch garnicht).
Auf der ProTos präsentierte ich am Pagedown-Stand zwei Tage lang Iron Soldier.
Das Publikum war begeistert. Die häufigste Frage, die mir gestellt wurde, war:
"Kann ich das Game schon kaufen?". Nun, in ca. zwei Wochen ist es soweit.
Ständig hörte ich solche Aussagen wie: "Hmmm, jetzt muß ich mir wohl doch
einen Jaguar zulegen!" oder "Wow, die Kiste kann ja wirklich was!".
Ein oder zwei kritische Stimmen waren aber auch dabei. Ein Gast fragte mich,
warum die Gebäude "nur" aus normaler Vectorgrafik bestehen würden. Nun, Iron
Soldier benutzt Texturemapping und Shading nur bei manchen Häusern aber bei
allen Gegnern. Die Welten sind extrem groß. Natürlich hätte man mehr Textures
einbauen können aber die Geschwindigkeit sollte hier im Vordergrund stehen.
Außerdem sieht Iron Soldier auch so unglaublich beeindruckend aus. Ein Gast
beschwerte sich über die Explosionen der Häuser. Das sei nicht besonders rea-
listisch. Nun, was soll man dazu sagen? Ich habe noch keine coolere Explosion
gesehen!
Auffällig war, daß die Verkaufszahlen des Jaguar am Stand immer dann in die
Höhe schnellten, wenn ich mit Iron Soldier auftauchte.
Neben all den positiven audiovisuellen Eindrücken sollte ich auch nicht ver-
gessen, daß Iron Soldier verdammt viel Spaß macht. Leute, bestellt Euch die-
ses Game schon mal vor, sonst könntet Ihr Probleme bekommen, das Modul noch
rechtzeitig vor Weihnachten in den Händen hallten zu dürfen.
Am Ende noch eine gute Nachricht: Eclipse hat bereits mehrere neue Projekte
im Visier, darunter natürlich auch Iron Soldier II und noch ein paar andere
Hämmer, über die ich Euch aber noch nichts konkretes verraten darf! Wartet's
ab und staunt...

At the ProTos (event) I had the occasion to see for myself what Iron
Soldier from the German firm Eclipse looks like. I'd like to thank Marc
Rosocha, the head chief in charge at Eclipse -- many thanks... (etcetera)

I could hardly wait to have the final version of Iron Soldier in my hands.
I've known about this project since the beginning of 1994 and have looked
through the games several times since then, playing test levels. I was
especially thrilled by the presentation and the (assureschiedenen?) missions.

In Iron Solider, the player controls a gigantic robot through enemy lands.
The aim of the games is to complete (successfully) 16 missions. Powerful
adversaries oppose you, (who would join as companions to spit in your gear??)
You can select from roughly eight weapons, though not all are available from
the start. You begin the game with one little rifle. You can improve your
weaponry with grenades, a machine gun, or the (one use? all powerful?) missile
you find later in the game.

At first you have the choice between four missions and only one weapon (the
little rifle). When you successfully complete the first four missions, you
and reach the next four and so forth. (part deleted, not sure if it says that
he has criticisms of the in-game images, as eyes have to wander around
the screen.) In the upper left you see your robot and the position of his
arms, (the movement becomes problematic?)

On the right side is the radar. Bottom- and air(ziele?) become shown
(verschieden) color. On the under part of the screen you see the status
meter of the Iron Soldiers. Here you can read how healthy you are. Weapons
are changed with the number keys on the Jaguar pad. You shoot with the
B-button. A in tandem with Up or Down on the controlpad (does some sort of
movement...) The control mechanism is naturally at first.. (something, maybe
confusing?) - it doesn't feel all that difficult.

The great graphics start from the beginning. Previously Mark was responsible
for graphics in the Atari and Amiga demo scenes and he made a good name for
himself, where the elite call him. The (read? text?.. what's this mean?)

You can hear the sound, also. The effects sound very realistic. The helicopters
sound extremely realistic. Six songs plus title music are there for he who
player through the different missions. The title music stems (comes) directly
from Atari, and the in-game music from a single German programmer. Don't fear,
the songs sound wild and are as vital as the songs in Tempest 2000. Now,
noone will claim that the Jag has a problem with sound!

The vector graphics in the game fly on RGB-outputs with a maximum frame rate
of 30 frames per second, on PAL consoles with 25 FPS. (this is a rough
translation here:) When you see this all happening, a whole row of houses
falling to the earth, you can hardly (describe it?)... Especially in writing
when the houses burst. (etc) You'll see it yourself!

Shoot a missile and you change the perspective. There, you can point the
rocket and can navigate it exactly. This is where Iron Soldier's speed is
shown off. After the impact...

..the missile changes the camera to another view. There, you can sit back
and watch the (devastation?).

Naturally Marc and Michael Bittner built cheats into the game...
Understandably, I can't share the cheats with you. At the ProTos presentation,
Iron Soldier was shown for two days. The audience was enthusiastic. The big
question was: "can I buy that game [in stores] already?" It's two weeks off
(in California?). Standing here, I can predict hearing: "If I want to live,
I have to get a Jaguar!" or "Wow, what power it actually has!" (I think
that's what it meant.)

One or two people were critical. One guest at the show asked me why the
graphics only consist of normal vector graphics. Now, Iron Soldier uses
texture-mapping and shading not only on houses but on all buildings (?).
The worlds are extremely large. Naturally, the more textures you use,
you slow down the game, and speed should be the foremost concern in this
game.

Others saw Iron Soldier as incredibly impressive. One guest wasn't impressed
(??) with the explosing houses, that they weren't especially realistic. What
is someone supposed to say to that? I've never seen cooler explosions.

Iron Soldier is out.) Besides all of the positive aesthetics, you should also
be assyre that Iron Soldier will be a big hit. Many people already ordered this
game before release, and other people will have problems getting this game,
(there's still an opportunity to get it and have it for Christmas?)

Here's a last piece of quality info: Eclpise already has several new projects
on the horizon, naturally inclusing Iron Solider 2 and a pair of other
projects, but I can't tell you anything concrete...

I don't read German, but I think I can extrapolate some of the vague points
with the dealer video...

Probably the "cruise missile," a one-shot weapon system that you can
