Well folks - good new and bad news. The good news is WOLFENSTEIN 3D is now
available for the Jaguar, the bad news is, this initial shipment is
limited (Atari did say this was going to happen). My place got 6 copies,
and we have 2 left as of 11:00 AM Wednesday (July 6th). Supposedly more
are on the way, but my distributor can't give me the exact day as of yet.

Gotta love that software support. Like Jag owners haven't waited long
enough.

Umm, I've tried calling you guys for Wolf 3D, but you have
office hours of 9-5 weekdays. Most people work those days.
You'd probably sell a lot more if you stayed open till 7 or 9
and were open saturadys. A lot of people buy on impulse and
if guy A is open and guy B is not, they will buy it from guy A.
Just a thought.

Without a doubt your right. We're fairly new on the block, and we have
been testing the waters with our schedule. We've already come into
agreement that later hours would be a lot a better; especially for people
on the West Coast. These new hours will go in to effect shortly. UPS picks
up about 4:30 every day, so the bulk of our calls seem to come in before
that time. Of course, there are many people who are first getting home
from work 6:00/6:30, and suddenly decide they want to place an order.
Thanks again for your input! Come this fall we'll be practically sleeping
there! <g>

Thanks again - your in the computer, you'll get overnight C.O.D next time
with no problem (that's of course if you need overnight C.O.D on the next
title <g>). We do take C.O.D's, but with first-time orders, we usually
don't do them overnight. I was being a little cautious in case you might
have found Wolf locally and decided to cancel (overnight costs are a pain
to eat <g>). Geez, I wish we got more Wolfs - although we should be
grateful for the amount we recieved (24 total). I hear the next batch is
coming about 10 days - this time in full swing, and by that time, Brutal
Sports Football should be out (hope so). I really hope this "limited
shipping" doesn't happen with Aliens vs. Predator or Kasumi
Ninja...imagine the fiasco? Take care...

Let me add that I also bought Wolf 3D (and Vay) from Tronix on Friday
and received excellent and knowledgeable service. Some time ago
I posted a message that Leigh's Computers, one of the last great
independent software retail stores in New York City had closed. There
was much lamenting that chains (like Elbo and Software Etc) and
mail order houses had made it impossible for a small retailer to
stay in business employing knowledgeable, intelligent people (who
are substantially more expensive than know-nothing sales droids).

Well Tronix appears to be the baby of one of those knowledgeable,
intelligent people (the manager of the now defunct Leigh's) and he
still knows everything about the industry crucial microseconds
before the competition :-). I should point out that I'm not
affiliated with either Leigh's or Tronix, I just feel we should
appreciate and support good service. Give Tronix a call --
you'll be glad you did.

Let me add to the list: Buy-Rite Video Games in Raleigh, NC. They are a
bunch of dishonest pricks. Avoid them at all costs.

So, has anyone kicked Atari's corpse to see if it's really dead? Shoot the
slow lame-brained bloke if it's not, and put it out of its misery. I'm
sick of waiting for them to release everything they were promising 9
months ago.

Why, what happened at Buy-Rite? Their prices look very
good, and I was thinking of ordering from them. (In fact, my local
Die Hard Game Club gets their stock from Buy-Rite) Are they notorious
for bad service? The only time I got burned mail order was with the
Ultimate Game Club several years ago...but then again, who hasn't been
screwed by the Ultimate Game Club at one time in their life.

Excuse me? Why? I've dealt with them a number of times with never a
problem, and got some great deals on PCE games. Why do you not like
them? (You also "added to the list" of places that people liked to deal
with, BTW.

Unless you want to pay way too much for an import copy of the latest one-
on-one fighting game for (not so) super famicom or mega drive,
AVOID B*Y-R*TE
I visited there "store" at a local flea market and they had big screen tv's
with kids playing Super Street Fighter II with genesis controllers and
something else on the snes. However, the actual machines were hidden.
All the person in charge could talk about were fighting games, and he never
mentioned that SSFII was coming out in just a couple of weeks to stores
everywhere, for less money, and with instructions in English.
Nobody asked, but I felt that was really not fair to the average kid who
has seen screen shots and advertisments with "summer" as a release date.

They had Jaguar for $230 (I think) and the usual games a couple of dollars
less than retail all but hidden behind the register where no one could look
at the boxes.

The moral of this story:
It's a shame that good independent (read not elbo/babbages) stores go out of
business while places like the afore mentioned thrive on unsuspecting
customers that think they are getting a bargain.

Thanks for the warning. I'd heard good things about them previously,
but you sound a little more informed. I was going to order some import Mega-Drive games (Monster World 4) but after hearing this, NO WAY. Any recommendations
or other places to avoid?

I guess if you're dealing with them over the phone you wouldn't understand
my hatred for them. If you call them and ask about the availability of a
game they always say they have it, but it magically disappears when you
show up to buy it. They rarely give out prices on the phone, hoping to
screw you when you get there. They sell used games as new. Basically, when
dealing with them face to face, I'd rather be buying a used car.

Nothing a few releases from Atari couldn't help.

Well, as I mentioned earlier, I've bought stuff from them a number of
times and have always been satisfied. They have low prices on Jaguar
stuff (most games are $40 new, Tempest is $50, jag console is $226, I
think). They also have great prices on lots of PCEngine imports, and
older PCE games (new in package) are often sold very cheap (many SCD
and hucard imports are under $20). Newer SCD imports are cheaper than
Die Hard, etc...

I think the "bad service" subject is misleading. If you have a problem
buying imports when US versions are coming, then OK. But that is *not*
a service issue. Buy Rite immediately verifies that items are in stock,
and either ships COD immediately or as soon as payment is received.
They've always been prompt and courteous in my experience, i.e.,
"*good* service"! $^)

I disagree.

>> However, the actual machines were hidden.

Yes -- have you seen how busy that place gets on a Saturday afternoon? I can imagine
some sticky fingered person walking off with a game before anyone notices, or monkeying
around with their consoles. I would do exactly the same thing as him.

>> All the person in charge could talk about were fighting games, and he never

That is because he is in business to make money, and he has stock to sell. If you are going
to spend more than $50.00 for a game, I should hope that you would do a little research
and make sure that expensive import won't be available domestically. There are a couple
of Japanese 3DO releases that I would like, but I'll be damned if I ever spend $80.00 on
a video game. Some people feel differently.

>> Nobody asked, but I felt that was really not fair to the average kid who

Most of these kids know what they are getting. They have convinced their old man to get it
for them, and they don't want to wait until the US release.

>> They had Jaguar for $230 (I think) and the usual games a couple of dollars

He had a Jag display with all the info set up in a very prominent place last time I was
in there -- in the center of the store. He has the Jag games right behind the counter,
right next to the 3DO stuff. A better place than where the Lynx stuff is....

He consistently has cheaper prices than any other game retailer in my area. He actually
had the 3DO on sale for $399.00 (with JPI and Crash'n'Burn) last weekend.

>> The moral of this story:
>> It's a shame that good independent (read not elbo/babbages) stores go out of

I consider Buy Rite to be a good store. Mark is a businessman -- he never makes a deal to
give you something for nothing, but often times he still is cheaper than any other place.
I went to a competitor across the street from Buy Rite (in the other flea market) to get
Total Eclipse. They had it for $45.00. I wanted to trade JMF94 (no box/instructions) and
$$ for the game. They offered me $8.00 for the game, total price $39.22, including tax.

I then went over to Buy Rite. He had a copy of TE without the box, but with instructions,
for $40.00. This included tax, and I kept JMF94, which I have subsequentally sold for more
than $8.00. I'm pleased with my purchase, since some 3DO titles fetch a premium price, even
used, just like with any other system.

Again, Mark is a little clever -- watch him go through his calculator routine when he
figures out what kind of deal he can make. Often this deal is close to his regular price.
It doesn't hurt to ask, though -- occasionally he'll knock a little bit off. His prices are
still quite low -- although the dealer across the street is giving him some competition.
