Hey Guys, I just picked up an Asteroids this weekend (Whoo-Hoo -
Finally got one!!!) It's in really good shape cosmetically and even
thought it doesn't work I know I can fix it. My question today is with
the monitor (G05-802) this is the first time I've seen one with a dark
gray spot in the middle of the screen. The spot is about the size of a
silver dollar but not perfectly round and when the game is on (the
spot killer is on) the dot that would normally be in the middle of the
screen is located in the below and left of this spot. I haven't had
as chance to work on anything yet but I'm worried that the tube
it'self may be damaged or bad. Anyone ever see this before? is it a
bad tube? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

The black spot in the middle is from a circuit called spot kill. I
would turn up the brightness SLOWLY so see if it goes away. If it does
respond to that I would start replacing components one by one to see
which one if failing. This game is 40 years old and as many XY
monitors I as I repair you should get a repair/service manual for the
monitor and be prepared to every once and a while. Atari developed the
XY monitor for it's games but because they were so poorly engineered
the industry adopted raster instead. I don't want to scare you but
prepare you for long-term ownership. Once you get the hang of them you
will be able t recognize problems so start a symptom and solution
journal.
