In Replay, there's an ad from Randy Fromm's arcade school. One
of the items in the ad is "Randy Fromm's big blue book of really
great technical information." It costs $40. Does anyone have
any idea what really great information the book has, or if it's
worth $40?

Thanks.

I bought a Frogger at a recent auction knowing that it was broken. It
looks like the problem is the monitor. Fortunately, I have the
schematics, but fixing analog circuits has never been one of my
talents. What are my options? Are there places that will swap out
broken monitors for less than the $200 a new one would cost? Is a TV
repair place likely to be able to fix it?

FYI - it's a Sega monitor which seems to be really a Nanao monitor.
The power supply board is toasted (literally), but who knows what else
is wrong which might have caused the PS to fail. Is there anywhere to
get replacement circuit boards?

Andy Fromm has been kind of the super tech/teacher for the arcade
gaming industry for quite some time. I think the "Big Blue Book"
is kind of a living document but as of a few years ago it was a
collection of various articles, mostly by Randy, from RePlay and
Playmeter, etc. There was a fair amount of good info in the
Big Blue Book.

He had a really good article with flow charts in RePlay last year
on repair of the 4 most common older raster monitors used in video
games (WG 4600, 4900, and 4700 series, and Electrohome G07). It
made the $60 yearly subscription to RePlay worth it just for the
article. I've fixed about 4 monitors in very little time by just
going through thoses flow charts.

The video tapes are a bit pricey. He used to have one on X/Y
monitor repair (most the ones used by Atari). It had some good
info but the acting was really funny :-) Gosh, you too can
impress the women with your knowledge on monitor repair :-) :-)
