I was reading online that you can degauss an arcade monitor by turning a
soldering iron on with the tip faced away from the monitor....
Is this true?

I need a monitor degaussed and I can't find a degausser below $145
Canadian!!

Thank in advance!

I've read you can do it with a drill too. never tried it though.

Yes, a large soldering GUN (not an iron) will do it - the heating coils
produce a magnetic field, you put the gun reverse side to the tube and
move away from the tube while moving the gun in a circular spiraling
inward direction until you're pretty far away from the tube, then turn
the gun off.

Takes a couple of tries usually to get completely degaussed.

I've taped a small speaker with a big magnet to the end of a cordless
drill and turned it on in front of the working monitor and had great
success. Make you secure it with a lot of duct tape!!! Just be
careful how fast you make the drill spin the magnet, or you will have
a projectile.

Or just use the degaussing coil out of a discarded TV or monitor, or buy
a proper degaussing wand, I think I paid 5 bucks for mine on Ebay.
