Best emulator for Asteroids?

Are visitors here allowed to mention the word 'emulator' or is that a
taboo subject?

Here goes anyway, hoping for the best .................

What is the best, most faithful Asteroids emulator for the PC or the
Mac? I'm after one that not only plays and sounds right, but that also
LOOKS right and that does its best to accurately emulate the bright,
intense vector graphics.

MAME doesn't cut the mustard in that department I'm afraid.

Thanks,
Phil

Your best bet is to pick up Atari Anniversary Edition by Infogrammes.
But that STILL doesn't correctly emulate the vector intensity of the
player, the bullets, or the saucers. Your SOL on that, I'm afraid, as
nothing correctly emulates that behavior besides the real machine.

Thanks. I've now found the emulator I was thinking of: Vector Dream.
It can be found at:

http://caesar.logiqx.com/html/emus/multi/vector_dream.shtml

Not as good as the arcade original but miles better than MAME. Gives a
lovely glow effect to explosions too, plus you can alter the display
settings.

You're not going to find a better emulation of a vector game than MAME...as
far as I know.. With MAME, you can adjust the flicker, to make it look more
like a real vector display, though it's still not perfect. I think Tempest
in MAME is damn good! Best of luck..

That's interesting considering that the author, Peter Hirschberg,
contributed a lot to the vector portions of MAME.

How curious. Maybe I'll go and fiddle with MAME a bit more.

I recommend the "Retrocade" emulator. Asteroids is about as close as
you're going to get on a PC. The sounds are darn near perfect...MUCH
better than MAME.

No MAC version available, though, if you're stuck with a MAC:)...

MAME is about the best there is, there's a reason those games used a
vector monitor in the first place, some of the effects just can't be
done properly on a raster display, even to this day.

Not even using a decent 3D card? I've seen some very nice 'glowing
effects in 3D games, so surely these could be transferred to a vector
emulator? The game would still look as it should, ie 2D, but the
driving force would be the 3D 'engine'.

Or am I talking drivel? :)

How about the graphics?

No, but I've been fiddling with a Mac emulator. :)

I have to agree. VectorDreams is the only emulator that emulates the
"glow" to a semi-decent state. Not perfect or even close to a real
vector game, but I was so disenchanted with MAME and Retrogames I had
to search (and search) for it until I found a copy again.

Too bad he abandoned the project to work for MAME

-Curtis Hart

PS. VDreams does a pretty good job with Lunar Lander, too.

True, but the best so far on a raster screen.

It took me a while to track it down too, very glad I found it though.

>Too bad he abandoned the project to work for MAME

Too right. I wonder if he could be encouraged to restart work on
Vector Dreams? There is a http://www.peterhirschberg.com/ and I assume
it's the same guy given his work on various great-looking simulators.

>PS. VDreams does a pretty good job with Lunar Lander, too.

I've been playing Asteroids too much to try LL. :)

I'm sure someone could make it look pretty darn good if they tried,
still you won't get the brightness of the shots that the vector monitor
could do, though a nice simulated haze around them could make them look
close.

That sounds promising. I wonder who would be prepared to take on such
a worthy challenge?

Hiya!

How about Vectrex? It has to be the closest to the original, although
it's not an emulator as such.

Yours, Mark.

Nothing against the Vectrex, but it's not quite like the arcade
original. Neither is an emulator, but it's the closest I can get right
now.
