2) Blasteroids............Atari 1987 Excellent Sequel !!!
3) Peter Packrat....... Atari 1984 Great, unique game
4) Indiana Jones.... ...Atari 1985 Good sounds, voices
5) Marble Madness....Atari1984 Great music and play

Does anyone see a pattern here ? Granted that Dig Dug was actually licensed from Namco, and got more of my quarters than any other
game, Atari rules.

Atari made some of the best games ever written in my opinion. If I am missing some really cool game out there I could be playing,
I'd like to hear about it.

OK, don't know if they are from the 80's but the are from atari and they
rule:

Toobin
720°
Paperboy

Really, Atari put out some of the most unusual games ever. Sad that this
company is gone.

I saw one person mention Williams, but they are definitely under-

The most intense, creative, ground-breaking games! Joust,
Defender/Stargate, Robotron, Sinistar!!??...unbelievable!!

Yea, we've done this before, but it's still fun!

My list:

1. Tempest (the black and green levels offer the most intense gameplay
of any video game ever...still holds true 20 years later, IMHO)
2. Robotron (a very close second to Tempest in sheer intensity, especially
at setting 10)
3. I, Robot (as unique of a game as it gets...as it turned out, too unique
for its own good:))
4. Quantum (probably the simplest idea for gameplay ever, but it sure is
addictive!)
5. Marble Madness (2 player is a blast...only problem was that the game
was too darn short)

Honorable mentions:

Stargate, Wizard of Wor, Venture, Black Widow, ZooKeeper, Discs of Tron, Qbert

#1 Without a doubt...Space Firebird! The sounds, the gaudy colors,
the "warp" feature. This game was & still is the 80's for me!

#2 Elevator Action. When Agent Otto pulls off in the car, his face
looks enormous...it never ceases to crack me up!

#3 Mario Bros. My college roommate & I dug in the couch cushions for
quarters many a night to mosey down to the corner food mart for a
Little Debbie cake and a two-man game of Mario. I was always Luigi, I
still sometimes feel compelled to wear green overalls!

#4 Tie - Gorf, Space Fury & Sinistar. Games that mock me just pull the
coins out of my pocket!

#5 Popeye. Just something fun & very 80's about it.

Later!

This reminds me of the convenience stores in the 80's. Most of them used to have a dark little "game room" with no more than three
games.

You wouldn't see that in today's litigious americana. "Someone could get molested, or trip and fall and their face would go through
the glass of a video game !!!" God forbid.

Besides, the days of the 24 inch wide video game seem to be over. Now everything is a three-screen behemoth that costs anywhere
between $ 2,400 and $28,000 and cost two bucks to play.

this is okay. between all of us here on RGVAC, when the arcades go under, we
will be able to stock a hundred arcades with every classic known to mankind, and
many more with some classics and every jamma game ever made, and so forth, and
with quarters in hand they will come, the children of the 70's, 80's and 90's
will realize that having a playstation just isn't the same.

now how cool would that be?

I've loved playing Wizard of Wor since day one.

I used to play it with this guy(damn if I can remember his name) and we
would just zone out and kick some "Maximus Buttimus". :o) We'd get crowds
and crowds of people watching us every Tuesday evening(yep, that was one of
my two allowed times in the arcade). Damn was that a good time.

Now I have two Wizard of Wors and I wouldn't give either one up. One has
the fold down front door(very nice feature) and one doesn't, I guess it has
to be a collector thing right? :o)

Happy Holidays,

Though I've always preferred pins to vids, there were several games that
took my quarters if my favorite table wasn't available.

In order of release:

1980: Battlezone (easily ate the most quarters of all)
1980: Missle Command (worn trackballs take chunks of flesh)
1981: Donkey Kong/Kongorilla (DK bootleg)
1981: Scramble
1981: Omega Race (I bought a Vic 20 just for this game)
1982: Moon Patrol (I can still hum the tune)
1982: Pole Position (Didn't care for PP2, though)
1982: Robotron: 2084 (Coin detected in pocket)

Interestingly, 1982-1985 was when I was in the Army, and had more
quarters to spend...

Pretty mainstream stuff here, but I really like

mario bros -- one of the greatest two player games ever
ghost n goblins -- one of the earliest and best platform shooters
bubble bobble -- quirky, weird, and much better than puzzle bobble
gradius/lifeforce/salamander -- remain some of the best shooters
star wars (vector) -- I'll take this over any recent star wars game

The problem with 80's arcade games is I've found most of the obscure games
were obscure because they stunk :)

There's one here in Seattle, the Hi Score Arcade. They have a few newer
games and pins, and then one room that is a full retro-cade with EM
pinball tables and a huge list of 80's games that includes: 720, Asteroids
Deluxe, Bosconian, Burger Time, Cabal, Centipede, Championship Sprint,
Donkey Kong, Galaga, Gorf, Joust, Klax, Lost Tomb, Ms. Pacman, Popeye,
Roadblaser, Robitron, Star Castle, Star Wars, Streetfighter 2, Tapper,
Tetris, Tempest, Tron, and Xevious. I've gotta think (hope) that other big
cities have something similar :) -dan

I know the EM pins are all operated by Silver Age, the have EM pins in
about 20 locations around town. Basically two guys putting their hobby
into business. I think it's a similar case for the 80's games, there's a
local bar that has a bunch too, the same op seems to supply both places
because the games rotate between the two occasionally. And you know, at
the all-ages arcade there are not only tons of adults playing the 80's
games, but a fair amount of teenagers. -dan

I still can't get into Battlezone, I've got my cabaret at my dad's place

frustrates me to the point of not being fun, am I missing something?

Whats your score like on battlezone ?? I find that after a while I'm
sweating pretty good trying to keep those fast tanks off me. At about
200,000 points it starts to get pretty intense !! :-) You have to visualize
the 3D objects around you and picture your movement relating to debris etc.
Nothing is worse then scooting backwards to miss an inbound and hitting an
obstruction and getting smoked . . . Gotta love battlezone . . . I wonder
if the expression "In the ZONE" started there ;-)

I read a hint recently that helped me greatly. I never had problems with the
tank shots (well, no more than usual) but he missiles always screwed me. I
tried hiding behing the big squares until they went away <g> and that sometimes
worked - sometimes not.

I read if, as soon as you see a missile, you stop and turn left hard about half
a second, the missile should pretty much some right at you. I played one game
recently as Funspot and with this tactic, set my all time high of 94,000.
About 8 of 10 missiles were easy pickings. :)

1) Bosconian (I played the cocktail version)
2) 1942
The above were the only two I ever got "really good" at.

3) Gorf
4) Robotron 2084 (I sucked, but I loved it)
5) Omega Race
6) Qix
7) Joust
8) Asteroids
9) Centipede
10) One of the first karate games (~83+/-). I have no idea which one.
11) Dig Dug

If anyone wants to sell any of these (or other '79-85 era games), and
they're within reasonable distance from Raleigh-Durham, email me (I'm
just starting to collect).

Ok . I'm totally new here so I better join
an easy thread

1. Defender (ALL time best game ever in concept and design)
2. Robotron (another belter from the Williams boys}
3. Galaxians
4. Crystal Castles (those damn trees)
5. Scramble
6. Marble Madness (Trackball madness!)
7. Donkey Kong
8. Star Wars (vector belter)
9. Gauntlet (great co-op play)
10. Super Sprint (again , co-op)

I still think that Defender is the most seminal game ever.
I was about 11 when I first played it back then.
In my book it scores a perfect 10 in every department.
Perhaps the next greatest milestone in gaming was Doom although the concept
was well established by then.
Does anyone remember 3D Monster Maze on the ZX-81?
