What is the hardest to find color for computer space.
I have seen
Green - 2 player
Red - seems to be most common
Yellow
Blue.

Any others?
My guess is blue is the rarest.

I have also seen a golden nutting pong-copy in a molded computer space cab.
Anyone ever seen that game?

Yes, but white and/or silver were one-offs for special purposes. If you are
talking about regular production games, I believe the yellow is the rarest.
It certainly was the first before all the sparkle colored cabinets and in
talking with Nolan Bushnell one time, he seemed to give the impression that
yellow was the rarest also.

So get this, a couple weeks ago a co worker of mine comes to ma and
says, "you have arcade games?" I said, yes. He goes on to tell me
about a 13" Space Invaders CT that he has and might be looking to get
rid of. We get to reminiscing about the old games. I ask him if the SI
is the only game he has. He then tells me about a game he used to have
10+ years ago. De couldn't remember the name, but he described a
Computer Space to a -T-.. When I asked if he still had it or what he
did with it, he told me that he "just left it in a garage or basement
of a rental he lived in years ago. UHgGGg... "Where? Where?" He can't
remember. He said he got tired of lugging it around from house to
house so he just left it. So Somewhere in the Basement or Garage of a
rental in Cleveland, there is a Computer Space, Just waiting to be
found...

I like Blues too, but I think that they are pretty common along with
Red CSs. 2 players are pretty rare from my point of view.
I think most the group will agree that Yellow is the rarest of the
standard production models.

Silver. Only one of them, and who knows where it is at? Was last seen in
"Soylent Green". :-)

Following up my own post - the Computer Space in Soylent green appears
almost exactly 8 minutes into the film. It is definitely white, not
silver. If anyone wants to see a snapshot of it, let me know. If
anyone wants an MPEG of the scene, let me know.

Correct.. As far as i have read. the fiberglass cabinets on both the one
and two-player versions came in three different colors, glittering
green, glittering red, and glittering blue. The one in Soylent Green was
indeed painted white to blend in with everything else. So the other
colored ones must be less frequent in origin. I wish i could get ahold
of any colored one, locally ( of course, oh - and also free ) ..

The set it's used in an important one, used in several scenes, so you
don't have to wait long. There is only one shot of someone actually
playing it, but it happens early on.

1500 were made in all.

One player computer space:
The first fourty to fifty were made in solid colors:
the first run was made in yellow, believed to be less than a dozen in
all (or around 6 ?), the remainder of the 40-50 were made in red,
green, blue.
The other (of the 1500) were made with the 70s style glitter effect:
red, blue, green.

BTW: Computer Space in the movies:

http://www.cornershop.com/cmp/listen.html
and click on the song
"Brimful of Asha (Quicktime Video)"

Soylent Green: custom made for the movie in WHITE, not silver (where
did the silver one appear ? Never saw it or heard of it, anyone ?)

Jaws: a yellow one at the arcade at the beach

This is based on answers I got from different collectors (at AHS
etc.), who talked to Nolan Bushnell about that color issue.

Who has more infos ? E.g. on serial numbers ?

Any owners or collectors of CS around ? I still looking
for some more infos and parts or a whole CS.
I have CS, but I am looking for the electronics ...

TIA

I've got a 2-player glitter green Computer Space that works perfectly in
1-player mode, but Player 2 has bad control (rotates way too fast) and the
P2 rocket isn't drawn right, so it's next to impossible to play well as P2.
The serial number is 30414. Picked it up at an antique shop.

Hi, Neal, thanks for the answer. Do you think it would make sense to
get more CS owners together to exchange e.g. serial numbers, colors
and other specific
stuff around CS, e.g. phots of the interios and details to see if
something was changed in the production during those 1500 made ?

I am trying to somehow track down in how far serial numbers, colors,
production run fit together and other details (lock in the front etc.)
... well, I know that I am naiv, but I just love the CS and want to do
more than just have one (well except getting spare parts ;-) ). I am
fearing that nuttings' serial numbers don´t reveal much in the case of
CS, anybody knows more ?

Well, since I am sitting in Europe, I feel somewhat CUT OFF from the
CS scene that seems to exist in North America. And I can tell you,
it's not easy to find a CS here.

PS: I have a yellow single player: Serial Number 9644

I'm not sure if it makes sense, but I've seen too many sites with the exact
same Computer Space information on them and would be curious to find out
more about the machine. In particular, I think it would be neat to know the
geographic distribution of the machines (I'm in Racine, Wisconsin, US) and
roughly what portion of the machines are still working. Looking through old
RGVAC posts, it seems I've had to fix just about every problem with
Computer Space except the common ones, but then, most of those problems
were with 1 player units. I've heard the 2 player units were made after the
1 player units, so it's possible that N&A put in a more reliable power
supply to go along with the fourth board in the brain box.

The serial numbers on the cabinet are probably random but if the machine
still has the original monitor the serial number from that might provide
some information.

If you find out anything interesting, post it or send me an e-mail.
Similarly, if you do get a bunch of Computer Space owners together (I don't
know any others personally and the antique store people I got it from
didn't know anything about it) or have any questions about my unit, don't
hesitate to contact me at wil...@execpc.com

Exactly, it's allways the same infos one finds. I'll dig further as
often as I find the time to do so and try to use this google group
"preridodically" to find other owners on the globe.

In Germany, we recently have a big "Space Age" revival, thus numerous
articles appear in german news magazine (comparable to time magazine
etc.). The CS has recently made it a couple of times into such retro
articles as
an outstanding design example of the early days.

And that's what mainly fascinates me with CS: the cabinet design and
it's historical value as the first coin-op video arcade game.

Have a look:
http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/netzkultur/0,1518,196152,00.html

I just found out that the www.cornershop.com has the video clip with
the CS (Brimfull of Usher ... or so) now under another url. Have to
look it up again. But the CS there has an appearance of 60s or so. AND
IT'S YELLOW.

I'll send you an email later.

PS: It would be nice to someday/somehow find EX-Nutting employees who
dealt with CS marketing and distribution, who might have some more
details on distribution those days.

O.k.,
I looked it up again, and this answer fits the best to what other
collectors told me as well (I made a mistake with the first run of
flat colors). I also heard, that those cabinets, which DON'T have a
lock in the front under the control panel, belong to the first
production runs.

See here:
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=de&lr=&threadm=345EBB94.244%40mail.idt.net&rnum=2&prev=/groups%3Fq%3Dcornershop%2520%2522computer%2520space%2522%26hl%3Dde%26lr%3D%26as_qdr%3Dall%26sa%3DN%26tab%3Dwg

"The first 16 units (all single players)that made were SOLID colors of
Blue, Red, Yellow, there might be another color, but I cant remember.
after that all the single player games were metal-flake red, blue, and
maybe green. All the 2-player units are metal-flake green."

Someday I'll spend some spare money to visit one of these expo's in
the US. But a flight from Europe to the US with a CS in the luggage is
rather costly ;-), I'd rather pay that for shipment of a CS the other
direction, from the US to Europe.

I had 4 Computer Spaces at one time, but only one yellow.

Email replies from this long thread have smoked out 2 other yellow
consoles for a total of 3, the 4th was a gag as it turned out.

So... I now know of 3 yellow Computer Spaces counting mine.

I would find it hard to say any one color is harder to come by than
the
other.. I have seen very few blues but Joe says they are the most
common..
I've seen a LOT of red cabs.. and at least 4 2-players. I've never
seen a
yellow but I've heard of at least 5 of them over the years.. probably
all
different ones then to the ones Joe is referring to...

I think there were 1500

Yeah, 1500 is the correct figure AFAIK.. I've also heard that the
first 15 or
16 were solid color cabinets in red and blue, probably a few yellows
too.
I've seen a red solid color cabinet and I recall it is serial #14.
didn't
somebody say they had #16 a couple days ago? what kinda cab is that?"
"

Well whatever, 6 yellow, 16 yellow ...

It it were only 6 yellows, we'll know more if we get 6+ owners of
yellow ones together alone ?

I had a non-working Yellow back in 97-98 and sold it to a grad student who got
it going again.

Im sure he still lives around here, Ill see if I can find him for his serial
number.

btw, no offense to the yellow owners, but i think they are ugly. in fact, i
really only like the metal flake colors becuase they shine sooooo nicely.
