I have a GORF I just recently purchased that did not have the up and
down movement with the joystick. Left and right worked OK. Turns out
after a little troubleshooting, the opto for the down stroke was
defective that made the logic board think you were holding the stick
down all the time. Then the real fun started. The opto on the board
is no longer available. I tried all the usual old buzzards that have
obsolete parts, but no joy. To make a long story short, I found that
the NTE 3100 opto has the same characteristics, same housing, same
mounting hole dimensions, but the leads were just a hair wider than the
original. Being faced with having a vertically challenged GORF, I
opted for a little modification. Its actually quite simple. Get out
your dremel with a bit just big enough to fit a lead through, and drill
holes just outside of the old ones. I mean as close as you can to the
others. The holes end up still on the solder pads of the old and
require no jumpers. SLip in the new NTE3100 and solder it up... and
your downtown. Or uptown, depending on which opto was defective ;))
You will meet a gorfian doom, space cadet.
