I saw your post and I have several questions:
1. Do you except donations of machines? I have a non-working Armor Attack
(good shape, game logic works, monitor does not) in Southern Maryland.
2. Is there any project underway to scan in brochures and ads for the
various games? I have a freind who is very much into collecting these
but would not want to donate his collection permanently.
3. Did you ask Rick Schieve to sit on the Board of Directors?
Good luck with your museum, I remember the scoreboard from the back of
Joystik magazine, I think its great you are taking this bit of the past
and preserving it for future generations.

Just the kind of thing that I'd like to hear if I was going to that auction
with my limited fundage ;^) Sounds like he should have ended that message
with: Hope to outbid all "classic collectors". Guess I'm just a little
sensitive to companies buying up stuff in quantity.

Don't take it so hard. Twin Galaxies has been around a LOOOOOOONG time
(at least since 1982) and has done LOTS to promote videogames as good
clean fun and sport. They helped get videogame high scores into the
Guiness Book of World Records by taking the responsibility of cataloging
and verifying the players and scores; they helped startup and promote
(and sponsor?) the USA videogame team which was good publicity for our
favorite hobby when many considered arcades as dens for criminals and
games as brain-washers for promoting violence. Now they are trying to
preserve the games we all know and love from being lost to future
generations by starting up a museum. Personally, I feel they are to be
commended for thier efforts (way to go TG)!
After all, how much good does a Tempest do the world if it is sitting in
your living room? Are we in this just for ourselves? Most likely, TG
is out to get 1 copy each of the games they are serarching for and 2 or
3 at the most of some very select titles. That leaves TONS of machines
out there for us to buy after they get what they want. I agree with
that other poster earlier, we should be HELPING them, not scorning them.
In fact, I have a dead Omega Race that I would donate if they want to
pick it up in Texas.
The smart thing for auction attenders to do is find the TG guys and
ask them what they are interested in and tell them what you want and
see if you can come to an agreement to avoid a bidding war. I am sure
they are GENUINELY interested in classic gaming not just as a way to
make big bucks (I have heard that the St. Louis Museum is making
almost no money and would be closed by now if it weren't for
government assistances). It sounds like TG already has most of the
really "popular" classic stuff and is looking for the really rare
stuff so I don't think too many conflicts are likely. I would be VERY
surprised it TG manages to find even 10 games that they need at this
(or any) auction...
Walter, can you give us more details about the musem? Has a loction
been identified (do you even know what state it will be in)?

"If you quote me on this I'll have to deny it; I won't remember because
I have such a bad memory. Not only that, but my memory is *terrible*."
The last auction was in Indianapolis. When I saw him, we talked about the games
at the auction. He asked me which ones I was interested in, and was polite
enough to not bid on those games (so I finally got that Donkey Kong that he outbid
me on in the last auction :)
At the auction before that, we were both bidding on the machine in the dead row,
and he turned to me and said "I'll let you have it", and I got it for $20. A game
that he had to later buy at the Indy auction for $150.
Also, at the Indy auction, my friend and I were worried about transportation.
He asked where we were from. We said Chicago, and he said he was going there,
too and said he would haul the games for us if we need to!
During the auction, there were about 5 classic games in a row (Robotron,
Joust, Stargate, Pac-Man, Moon Patrol), and he purposely let another person
outbid him on the Stargate because he felt bad that he had already outbid them
twice. That row alone got him on the way to a nice collection!
Walter Day is a very generous individual who has enormous respect for other
collectors. This is just my personal experience.
Good luck to your museum and your book, and hope to see you
at the next Des Moines auction!
