I strongly advise you to toss that piece o'crap 7820 laser player right
in the shit can where it belongs! Switch your board set(every rom
revision plays the same anyway) and get an LD-V1000 player, you'll be
happier.
If Websters dictionary was ever gong to add the word "SHIT" to there
list of definitions I'm sure they would illustrate it by placing a
picture of the Pioneer PR-7820 next to it!!!!!!
I've been woring on arcade games for over 10 years now and I never EVER!
come across a more USELESS piece of rusting JUNK than the Pioneer
PR-7820 laser disc player!!!!!
I hope this unit makes a better boat anchor than it did a laser disc
player as I intend to find this out this summer!(SERIOUSLY!!)

OK, so I gotta share:

When I got a DL ~8/10 years ago, it came with a broken 7820. I worked
for 2.5 years to fix that beast. Bought $100+ worth of manuals from
Pioneer. Tracked down one of the ORIGINAL ENGINEERS who designed
the beast. His quote: "Kid, you should forget it. We designed the
damn things and WE couldn't fix them."... needless to say, I was
fairly disheartened. That player was gutted for the laser platform :)

Several years later, thinking about how to fix my DL, I starting looking
for 7820s. It turns out that they were the FIRST commercially released
laser disk player. You can certainly tell the era by the
"Discovision" label.

Anyway, about 2 years ago I found a working 7820 for $50 at a ham radio
show. The thing weighed about 60 lbs so it took 2 of us to lug it
back to the car from the other side of the fairground.

When I got home, it still worked (hooray!). Strangely, that week I found
a second 7820, working, in original box at my University's property
disposition outfit -- complete with new remote!... So, now I have 2 7820s.

IMHO, the best thing someone on here into laser games could do is to
build a universal interface for most of the old games. Something
that translates the codes for given games into something a modern
player can read. A pretty simple task if you can collect up the
codes for the major players (1000, 7820, 8210, etc)

Actually, its not that simple. The 7820 and ldv-1000 (both used in dragon's
lair), used a parallel port interface. Most other players use a serial
interface. (Yes, I know that there are parallel -> serial converters). The
Ldv-1000 also sends out a 'stobe status' signal. I think it's used to let the
board know when its ok to send a command to the player. (I'm not an
electronics wiz; but this is what I gather from looking at the manual.) I
don't believe anyone has found a way to emulate the 'strobe signal'; and I
really don't know z80 assembler well enough to write code around this. I've
extracted the moves from DL2; I'm currently working on DL. (I can play 3 DL
boards on my DL2 boardset right now..) Once I have all the moves with frame
timing extracted; it should be easy to port to another board (like throwing a
pc board in the DL cabinet; which could also control other laser games like
cliff hanger. I'm having a little trouble with the DL rom (DL2 was easy by
comparison). I can't find anything on the score, and I'm having a little
trouble analyzing the death scenes as well... Care to help out? I need
someone to 'map' the score for 2 boards (The falling boulder board and the
tentacle board would be nice). Just write down each move, and the score you
recieve for it. This would give me something to look for in the ROM... (I had
posted this request once before, but I guess everyone was too 'busy' to
care.)

I have recorded the score value for every individual move on Dragon's
Lair.I took a looooong time, but I have the results.Ever notice how you
are awarded 49 points just for starting a board? Ever notice how the
first board is always either the filling wall, fire ropes or reversed
fire ropes (on the hardest setting you may get a wild card such as the
tilting floor as the first board!)Its all here, even a flow chart showing
the random order in witch the game may choose the screens! If someone is
writing an emulator chip to work with another player I WILL BE GLAD TO
GIVE THEM USE OF MY VAST KNOWLEDGE ON THIIS GAME! PLEASE REWITE THIS
GAME TO WORK WITH ANOTHER PLAYER, THE 7820's (BA HAA HAA HAA HAA) ARE A
JOKE! (read my recent posts!) AND THE LD-V1000's CAN BE A PAIN AT TIMES.
LET ME KNOW!!!

Here is the scoring for each individual move on the following boards on
the arcade Dragon's Lair, as played with rev "F" roms on an LD-V1000
player (note:all roms play pretty much the same regardless of revision
or disc player being used)(THE 7820 IS JUNK!!!!!!!)
"Tentical room" 49 points just for starting the board
1st move= 49 pts (SWORD)
2nd move=379 pts (FOWARD)
3rd move=495 pts (RIGHT)
4th move=915 pts (DOWN)
5th move=1326 pts (LEFT)
6th move=939 pts (FOWARD)
"Rollng colored balls" 49 points for just starting the board

1st move=251 pts (DOWN)
2nd move=379 pts (DOWN)
3rd move=379 pts (DOWN)
4th move=379 pts (DOWN)
5th move=379 pts (DOWN)
6th move=379 pts (DOWN)
7th move=379 pts (FOWARD)
If Dirk fails to "MOVE FOWARD" over the hole at the end of the balls, the
player will scan for the death sceen from the Reversed falling platform
board. It will just show the part where Dirk is falling down the
shaft, just after he attempts to jump onto the catwalk, but misses.I can
get you the frame numbers if you want.Hope this helps.
If you need any more help writing an emulator chip for Dragon's Lair, let
me know.
