Thought I would share some Gorf PCB repair.

Problem:
Game coins and plays but only the starfield background is visable.
Solution:
Replaced custom IC U15 on CPU board.

Problem:
No sound from the speech channel.
Solution:
Replaced open resistor R1 on audio amp board.

Dan,

Thanks for the post. This is more of the kind of thing we need on RGVAC!

Cheers!

That custom @U15-cpu card (40 pin, sometimes has a heatsink attached)
can also cause the game to lock up and not run at all resulting in
total loss of video output. It may run for a short time and fail when
it gets warm....shoot it with freeze spray to verify this. If the set
runs with a different cpu card this could be is the cause. About 80%
of the Nutting/Midway card cage sets I've owned/repaired had a faulty
U15 custom. Attaching a CPU fan to it can extend the life of it
depending on how far gone it already is.
Repro's would be a godsend (hint hint, engineers)

Slightly off the path-- I had a game dealer's tech tell me that the
custom audio chips in these sets were directly compatible with Atari
pokeys. THAT was a new one ;) Although they will read pots according
to the Nutting service manual. Never heard any sonic similarities in
the sound generation sections of the two...the card cage chip creates
more interesting audio IMO. Anyone researched this?

I've noticed the same thing about the heatsinks and generally figure
that chips without the sink have or will soon fail. So far with the
sink in place I've had close to 100% working out of 20 or so chips.

Yes, that heatsink really does help those chips... if you have a working one
without a heatsink, get one and super glue it on. In addition (as suggested
in a previous post) is mounting a cooling fan to blow air across the whole
cardcage is also a great benefit, as long as you can find a quiet one!

I *think* that someone is working on (or at least looked at) creating a FGPA
type substitute for this chip. The patents are online and have the
'schematics' and a good description of what it does. I was being discussed
awhile back in the ballyalley Yahoo! group (groups.yahoo.com). I haven't
heard anything recently, however... I'll see if I can check up on it.

Cheers!

I've got a fully working gorf mini, which obviously has a fully working
cage. Should i be at all concerned about this chip? The machine hasn't
had THAT much use since i got it 3+ years ago, but on the days we have
meets over here it can get left on for 8 hours+.

And i have a spare cage that i haven't really looked at yet, but it does
have a sync problem. Would this be at all related?

Other thing it has is a ram fault, but i know that's going to be TOTALLY
unrelated.

On a slightly different note, can anyone tell me how to connect up the
card cage tester cards? The manual was very vague and didn't tie up with
the connectors in the cab last time i tried.

Martin.

Wondering if this group is still active because I'm having some problems with my full size Gorf arcade?

Not many monitor this Usenet site any more - more's the pity - you may
have better luck elsewhere.

You might mention what the problem is though before wandering off.

Of course searching for your game name and a few words of the problem
may turn up answers on your favourite search engine...
