Exidy Crossbow - power supply rebuild

Hi all - i just picked up a very nice Crossbow. It works but has an
original powersupply. Someday that thing may die out.
I see past posts about wiring in a new power supply - but how? Does
anyone have a step by step walkthough (or some kind of adapter)? I
would appreciate it to keep this machine running forever. Thanks.

Hi;
You could swap out the Condor linear p/s with a switcher, that would be the easiest, otherwise you could rebuild the linear but that would be a lot of work.
Just use the schems and trace out the +5vdc and GND, if memory serves correct, that's all that is being supplied by that linear.
You should also replace the filter caps on the attached board, sitting above the transformer assembly as you will still need that to supply the other necessary voltages.

Is the Condor Linear PS that metal cage on the Power brick at the base
of the cab? If so, do i just take a Happ 5 volt PS, remove that gold
metal cage and put the Happ PS in its place?
Then, wire up the Happ PS to the AC Line (for its power), and connect
up the +5vdc and Gnd off the molex that runs to the board?
Also, i see those big caps on the filter board - 2 of them i think -
thats pretty easy to replace it seems.
And Finally - is there any harm in letting the game "run its natural
course" and just letting the linear PS die eventually? Would there be
any risk to taking out my board if the PS dies? Someone at a pin show
mentioned that a dying PS could take out my boards and i dont want
that to be the case. Feel like i am sitting on a ticking time bomb!

The linear p/s is attached to the top of the transformer assembly but without seeing a picture of what you are describing, I do not want to assume anything. But you are correct in the replacement procedure, remove old linear, connect A/C power to the switcher then GND and +5dvc to the PCB connections (Molex).
From what I have gleened from all that I have read, if a linear fails, it could kill your boardset, when a switcher fails, it just stops supplying the voltage......... no board damage... I have had switchers fail on me with zero damage to any components, replace the switcher, back in business.
Your best bet is to get a copy of the schems to make sure you are wiring everything correctly.
BTW, have you taken a reading of the +5vdc at the PCB?

and have an idea of how to wire in the switcher now. I guess all i
need to do before i wire that up to the board is make sure my first 3
pins have +5 and the last 3 have gnd. Should be good there.

Oh boy- if the a linear fails it could kill the boardset? Then i
better get on this ASAP. Its hard to find folks to repair exidy boards
in a timely fashion (and the cost too).
I havent measured my voltage - the huge cab is pushed to the wall next
time i get in there i am going to have a look. Dont plan on playing it
much until the PS gets here. But i am wondering what my 5 is running
at - maybe i will have a look while i wait for my Bob roberts order.

Ok - 5 volt PS is in. Very easy to do - game was playing at 5.30
before i made the change.
Ordered the wrong caps, so for now i will leave the pre filter board
caps in - hoping thats not a big deal.
