Hi all!..I'm sure this has been gone over 1000 times, but please bear with
me if possible.I want to get a new gaming system(I own Genesis&SNES),&
have really been looking at the 3DO seriously. The one negative thing I
forsee,is the unavailability of rental software(here in Cleveland,I know
of only one place that rents games&it's a good 20 minutes from my
location),therefore,I'll have to purchase most games,by the reviews I
read(here on the net & in magazines),unless anyone knows of a place (EB
perhaps??), that will let you return a game if you buy it & find out it's
a stinker. Now to get to
the topic at hand, which system(Goldstar or Panasonic),is the better of the
two??A woman at a Babbages store(didn't work there),told me the M2 unit
would only work with the Panasonic system...I can't see why this would be
true,I'd figure the M2 add-on would work with either.Here in Cleveland,I
can buy the Goldstar for $299(with FIFA & Shockwave),or the Panasonic for
$279(with I think Gex & Total Eclipse).A worker at Best Buy told me the
Panasonic had some graphic chip or something,& the graphics were a little
better on the Panasonic(could have been because that's the only model they
had in stock.) So if some of you don't mind, please give me your opinion on
which of the 2 systems is the one to choose.E-mail is welcome. Thanks!!!

Both EB and Babbage's let me do that. I wouldn't patronize a store that
didn't. Of course, to avoid annoying them I'd read reviews and ask
questions here on the 'net.

Both units are very similar as far as performance goes. Decide whether
you like the front or top loading better. Decide which controller you
like better. Decide which pack-in game(s) you like better.

The Panasonic M2 add-on will attach to the Panasonic M1. Goldstar will
build their own M2 add-on.

He doesn't know what he's talking about. (Unless he's talking about the
S-video connector, or lack thereof. If you have a S-video capable TV,
make sure the 3DO you buy has S-video outputs.)

The Panasonic and Goldstar systems play games exactly the same and 3D0 is
going to license the M2 to all the different 3D0 system manufacturers to
develop their own version of M2 so it will work with either the Panasonic
or the Goldstar. The only difference is the games you get with it. Hope
this helps in your decision.

A follow-up...

All 3DOs do have an S-video output. The Panasonic FZ-10 is "missing" the
RF output, which both the FZ-1, and the Goldstar unit, have.

(An RF connection lets you plug the 3DO into the "antenna" input of the
TV and watch it on channel 3 or 4.)

They are the same it's just depends which options you like better,
I purchased the Goldstar, I liked the game bundle better, the price was
better and I prefer the controller.
As far as the electronics go 3DO licensed the technology to both companies
they only license one design not different ones to defferent companies.

In article <davenagyD...@netcom.com>,

I do believe the FZ-10 does have the RF. In fact that is how I use
the machine when I bring it to work since the TV's here don't have A/V
or S-video cables.

It includes the cord and adapter as well. I think it was in Next
Generation where they report that it doesn't and even show a picture of
and FZ-10 that mysteriously doesn't have the RF but mine does and mine
is just a regular old FZ-10 (ie not a beta machine).

Blockbuster may carry 3DO software this Christmas. They have been
experimenting with it in certain stores.

You can avoid stinkers by checking the net. It's distinguishing between
games you really like and the average ones that is harder. You can buy
used games for around $25-$35 (some as low as $10) and then sell them
again for a little less. You only end up spending about $5-$10 per game
unless you keep it so long it depreciates in value or if you get it when
it first comes out.

Here's my list to help you avoid the stinkers:

Great Games - Must have
-----------------------
Wing Commander III
Road Rash
Need For Speed
Super Street Fighter II Turbo
FIFA Soccer
Shock Wave: Invasion Earth
Crash and Burn
The Horde
The Incredible Machine
Star Control II
Return Fire -- great 2 player game
GEX
Slam 'n Jam (*)

Good Titles - If in doubt, buy it
---------------------------------
Samurai Shodown
Shanghai: Triple Threat -- puzzle game
John Madden Football
Twisted -- goofy game
Total Eclipse
Super Wing Commander
Out Of This World
Gridders -- another puzzle solving game
Dragon's Lair -- looks good, not very interactive
CPU Bach
ESPN Golf: Lower Your Score with Tom Kite
Shock Wave: Operation Jump Gate -- not as good as the first SW
Soccer Kid -- good price makes this a good one
True Golf Classics: Waialae Country Club
True Golf Classics: Wicked 18
Panzer General (*) -- wargame, strategy, has savegame bug
Syndicate (*) -- good strategy game
Starblade (*) -- short, good game to rent
Space Ace (*)
Immercenary (*)
Demolition Man (*)
AD&D Slayer (*)
Theme Park (*)
Flashback (*) -- 2D strategy platform
Way of the Warrior (*) -- some love it, some hate it
3DO Sampler Disks -- worth it for only $5

Average Titles
--------------
Myst
Off-World Interceptor
Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes
Alone in the Dark
Night Trap
Monster Manor
Guardian War
Pebble Beach Golf -- blocky FMV, golf ball improperly modeled
PatAank
Station Invasion -- for kids
Zhadnost: The People's Game Show (Twisted 2) (*)
Lemmings (*) -- would be good if you have the 3DO mouse
Battle Chess (*)
Burning Soldier (*) -- some really hate this, but it looks nice
Nova Storm (*)
Supreme Warrior (*)
Hell (*)
Seal of the Pharaoh (*)

Below Average Titles
--------------------
Stellar 7
Virtual House -- slow, hidden surface removal bug
Mad Dog McCree -- impossible without a light gun, bad with it
Sewer Shark
3D Atlas
Rebel Assault
Strahl (*)
Pharoah's Curse (*)
Microcosm (*)
NovaStorm (*)
Who Shot Jonny Rock (*) -- same light gun garbage
Mega Race (*)
Quarantine (*) -- Doom in a taxicab, good FMV, bad graphics
Oceans Below (*)
Wacky Racer (*)
Family Feud (*)

Absolutely the Worst
--------------------
Tetsujin: Iron Angel of the Apocalypse (*)
Virtuoso (*)
VR Stalker (*)
Rise of the Robots (*)
Jurassic Park Interactive (*)
Shadow: War of Succession (*)
REAL Pinball (*)
Plumbers Don't Wear Ties (*)
Cowboy Casino (*)
Jammit (*)

Plumbers Don't Wear Ties (*)

(*) - I don't actually own this title, but know people that do or have seen
a lot of info (posts, reviews, etc) about it.

Ack... the guts are the same, sure... but the Goldstar's CD tray has the
drive mechanism built into it, making it feel really fragile. I'd rather
just flop a CD in the thing and clum the lid shut, instead, the whole CD
DRIVE comes in and out of my unit, and I have to firmly press and click
the CD into place in the tray... I'd say go with Panasonic...

Well, no matter how you evaluate games there will be people who disagree
with you. To be honest, I probably didn't give it a fair chance. Some-
times a game will just hit you the wrong way and if you're busy you may
not spend enough time to really get into it. I tried playing it for 2
or 3 nights and just couldn't get into the spirit of the game and so I
sold it. Perhaps I should rank it higher, since you seem to be in the
majority that it is a pretty good game.

How right you are (sorta). The 3DO company will licience the M2 Technology to the other companies.
Soooo the Panasonic M2 will work only with the Panasonic 3DO ... and the Goldstar M2 ...well you get
picture...

Both systems are equal... The graphics chip thing is a lot of <censored>. Both companies build their
3DO's to the specs that the 3DO company tell them to. No one (except the Sanyo (i think) it has MPEG
build in... but it's only availible in Japan... plus MPEG is outdated...wait for the M2 it'll have MPEG II in it)
has any technological advantage. The Goldstar unit sound good FIFA is AMAZING you don't need to be
a soccer fan to love this game... and Shockwave is cool too! I wasn't to fussy about Total Eclispe...
good game but gets boring after a while. Gex is cool... but a sidescroller (Super mario style) So if you're
a fan of that type of game go for the Panasonic... otherwise the Packin's for Goldstar are REAL good.
Remeber you can always buy the other games that you want (like Gex or FIFA).

It's your choice... I bough my 3DO when Crash'n burn was the pack in.. I rented Road Rash and bought
it the next day... WICKED GAME... I also own Return Fire(fun 2 players!) FIFA soccer and Wing commander
III... (that game is REAL wicked.!@!!)

Have fun...

Id move these up two notches to excellent. Especially
Alone in the Dark. :) The only down-side to these are
that they are adventure, meaning once you have solved them,
these are good trade candidates. However Myst's puzzles
and intriguing little machines that you come across are
facinating. AitD has very good atmosphere and good
interface (far more action than myst, which is a pure
puzzle game).

Wayne, Could you place this one lower? Perhaps
<Makes the worst look good> :)

James,
Definitely get slam -n- Jam. I have had the most fun with this
game. You can do some real neat things such as play in "franchise"
mode where you pick one player and just work him. I recommend the
center, its much easier to control defense. Also, its unique. Ive
never seen a b-ball game with this perspective and realism. I mean,
you even see reflections of the players in the varnished floors of
the court.

bye,
Doug

Again, I probably didn't give it enough time. I fell asleep playing it
the first time. It looked about as exciting as a Photo CD. I lent it
to my sister. She loves RPG's (like King's Quest), but she said it was
just OK. She finished it by buying the hint book. When I get it back
I'll see why some people really love it so much and then reevaluate.

Wayne.
