I had the good fortune of having temporary access to the world wide
web on the internet yesterday, and found a few gifs on the Tronix home
page of the formula 1 racing game by Pony Canyon. What I saw looked
like Microprose Software's World Circuit with external views as a bonus.
The cockpit view was very World Circuit'esque, while the overhead
(helicopter?) and behind views were similar to those offered in Virtua
Racing.

I was encouraged by what I saw because it did appear that this may
actually be a racing simulation instead of an arcade racer. If anyone
has any further info on this I'd love to hear it!

John - I don't know if this will help or not, but the other screen
shots (which I didn't scan) show stat screens (e.g, scores, times, and
other info) along side each of the Japanese drivers (photos images).
Then there's another picture showing values (I think it's some kind of
bar graph) of your car, so it may very well be a racing game with
plenty of meat on its bones. From behind (view), it definetly looks
like a Virtua Racing-style game, but the side scenery looks bitmapped,
as opposed to all polygon. Sorry the images are a bit blurry, but a new
scanner should be coming into play soon. :/

This is a big help. Sounds very much like a simulation. Do you know if
this will be an exclusive Japanese title?

That's interesting... I hope they can make it work!

How much of the picture quality is lost in the gif? I'm not that hip to
PC graphics. It is limited to 256 colors, right? I'm thinking that the
actual game would have more colors than the scanned images.
