I recently picked up 3 very cool looking japanese 3do games at a
pawnshop for $20. I have played jap 3do games on my console before but
i didnt notice that these ones say on the cover "for japan only".

Is there a swap method or something to play them with?
I have the original fz-10 model

thanks, any help will be appreciated.

They should work ok on your system. I have tons of Japanese games and they all
work fine.

Actually, i have tried playing them and it starts reading the disc then
acts as though there isnt a disk in the drive. Any ideas?

I own an American Goldstar. Not only does it play Japanese games quite
fine (with no stupid swapping techniques necessary as in Playstation,
Saturn et al), I am using it in Japan with no problems. Which is good,
because I can find lots of great 3DO games on clearance for about 100 yen
apiece in Akihabara.

Are you using a Goldstar machine? One of the visitors on my web site

Yet another reason to stick with the FZ-1 or FZ-10.

I have heard that certain games do not work properly unless your 3do has a
Kanji chip installed. It may be that there were several versions of the
Goldstar 3do. My FZ-1 is a multisystem PAL/NTSC unit with a Kanji chip built
in.

Most Japanese games should run fine on a U.S. 3DO console (one which
does not have the Kanji font it its ROM). Properly-written games use
an operating system utility which either accesses the font ROM, or (if
it's not present) loads the necessary glyphs from a Kanji file located
on the CD-ROM. Naturally, the games will run somewhat more slowly on
a system without the ROM, as the CD-ROM drive is slower than the
built-in ROM.

There were a relatively small number of Japanese titles (a few early
games, and some console-model-specific demo CDs) which don't use the
"load it from disc if it isn't in the ROM" routines, and these will
not run on a U.S. 3DO console.
