If anyone is curious, Zanen Electronics is still in business (they
really should get a website!). You can reach them at: 1-888-449-2636.

I asked about the missing caps and he said as far as he knows the
problem has been rectified, he hasn't had a complaint about missing
caps for years but if I need extras he was willing to send them out
for free. I also questioned him about 68A09/68B09 processors. He has
68B09's that he can pull off old, working boards for $3 and should
work as a drop in replacement. It's apparently the same chip
(according to datasheets I can find) except a faster clock speed.

Arcadechips.com sells replacement RAM and Sound Chips. The only thing
I'm having trouble locating is the 6552A PIA chip.

I don't need replacement parts, but having back-up's never hurts. :P

nice to know if you manage to find a supplier of 6552A chips...

Yeah, I haven't had any luck with this. I can't even locate a
datasheet on it. Do you know where I could locate one and I could
start researching similiar ICs.

I've just uploaded some 6522 datasheets on http://www.vectrex.fr/docs/6522/

Hello Frank,

just to let you know (for future reference) that on my website I've
got datasheets for most of the components on the logic board.

These can be found by going to:

http://www.vectrex.co.uk

Then selecting the Documents tab and then selecting "Data Sheets".

Would I want the N or S series?

Also @ VectrexMad and others, thanks for the links and quick responses!

*cough*

Also, my package arrived today. And for those who are curious, yes,
it is still missing the required caps that always seem to be a
problem. He sent me a 6809EP MPU. I believe this is a 1.0MHZ (from
the data I could find online) and not 1.6MHZ. I don't know if this
will work or not, he said if it doesn't he'll refund my money. But if
anyone knows, please let me know! :P

Here's the list of caps that are wrong:

C409 .47@50v Bi Polar (Zanen supplied 1uf@50v)
C410 .47@50v (Zanen supplied 1uf@50v)
C507 47@100v (Zanen supplied 4.7@100v)
C508 47@100v (Zanen supplied 22@50v)
C516 3.3@350v (Zanen supplied 4.7@250v)
C211 220@16v (Omitted from Zanen kit, but on the Zanen cap list)

I also have drafted up a letter to fax to zanen about the missing
capacitors (this appears to be an on-going issue with them). I'll let
you know how it goes.

I gave him a call today and he received my fax but hasn't sent
anything. He asked me if there was different revisions of the board,
he seemed to be confused as to why these were wrong. But in any case,
he said he'll be shipping out the replacement parts free of charge.

Thanks for reporting on the progress.
My Vectrex needs a cap update, and I am considering get their kit.

It's about $15 with S&H iirc. It might be easier to order the parts
from Mouser or Digikey. If you would like the complete parts list
(revised with the correct and missing parts) so you can order them
yourself let me know. (I'll probably end up doing this, just so it
can become public knowledge).

Its a fair price as long as the capacitors are good quality. I have a
list of the parts in a photo that I could post to USENET.

In case anyone is interested here is the text:

"This monitor repair kit is designed for the Vectrex portable home
video game arcade. Be sure to check that all the parts are included
in the kit: <lists parts>

Be sure to install all the parts on the monitor even though many of
the original parts seem to be working fine. Age, humidity, and
temperature will cause the value of electrolytic capacitors to
change. Installing all of the parts will assure many more years of
trouble free service. Each capacitor is polarized and can only be
inserted in one direction. Watch the polarity markings on each
capacitor. Make sure the game is unplugged and install the following
parts."

Just be sure to note where the bi-polar cap is!
