It's been over 3 months since I sent him money for his so called Vectrex
overlays, through Paypal. No contact from him since the money was
received. Complaint filed with Paypal, closed today with this from
Paypal:

Transaction Date: 07/02/01
Transaction Amount: $139.00
Seller's Email: bj...@rocketmail.com
Seller's Name: Thomas Price Jr

Our investigation has revealed that the seller
is at fault; as
a result you are due a refund. However, we
regret to inform
you that we were unable to recover funds from
the sellers account,
as the seller's account balance is $0.

What a crock of shit. Mr. Price, if you are reading this, you are the
lowest piece of crap I can imagine.

That truly sucks. I had considered ordering a set of the overlays myself.

I guess we now know what the "mf" in mfmurdock stands for.......

Yes, I agree with your observation. The "mf" stands for the obvious.

The worst part is I really thought this guy was legit - he has been around for
a while and I recall old posts from people who received stuff from him in the
past. This is not an isolated incident - I am aware of others who have also
fallen prey to this cheater as well, and after 3 months of no contact that he
is not returning emails for a reason.

I pulled the guy's link from my page awhile.

What a damn shame.

Not to try to justify what's happened here or anything, but is it
possible that something happened to him? Usually when this kind of
thing happens on the 'Net, it is smoeone just trying to rip people
off, but there has to be the odd situation where someone in the middle
of several transactions gets into an accident or something and ends up
in the hospital or worse... How would we know?

I don't know anything about this guy or the overlays he was selling,
but someone mentioned that he had been around for a while and sold
things to other people, so he doesn't really fit the stereotype of a
'Net con man...

Just a thought... Does anyone have a physical address for him, or
where all the transaction via PayPal?

Everything went thru Paypal, where he was "unverified". Obviously Paypal
couldn't contact him during their "investigation" because they ruled in my
favor. Big deal, they can't get any money back from him because his account
is $0. What a surprise, eh?

You may be able to get him with a chargeback (assuming you paid with a
CC through paypal.) However, since Paypal is a 3rd party you may be
limited in what you can do. Being unverified in Paypal is usually not
a big deal in my eyes because you have to give up your acct
information and bank acct's are not protected by fraud protection. I
too, am unverified. One step you should take is to contact the guys
ISP. Find out if he has logged on in a while, chances are he has not.
If he has not, there is a chance that circumstances out of his control
are to blame. Next, contact Law enforcement in your state and the
postmaster Chances are, this guy got a check from paypal, and needed
to show id and a drivers licence or cashed it at his bank which will
have his bank acct # on the back (where he endorsed it). Paypal
leaves a very good paper trail, and law enforcement can force paypal
to give them his CC information (which will lead back to him) and any
mailing address they sent the check to. They can also supena for the
cashed check and get a bank acct # (if he cashed it at his bank) or
his drivers license #. Since this is a crime that crosses state
bounderies it is federal and the FBI can get involved. In addition to
the above, solicit all of the classic game groups looking for people
who were ripped off and get them involved. It will get more attn at
the FBI than a single incident for < 100. I hope this helps.

Hello Chris,

That is a ton of good, useful info there, thank you for providing it. I
have not started any criminal investigation at this point. My credit card
company has credited the amount back to my account, since I did pay with a
CC to paypal. I disputed the charge to the CC company within the proper
time period and my CC company has backed me on this. Paypal's 33 day
"investigation" found in my favor, but no funds could be recovered - big
surprise huh? I also sent several emails to his ISP (Earthlink) as well
as placed calls to them, but I never got any info back from them regarding
him or his whereabouts.

I sent the guy $139 in good faith and never got anything back from him,
not even any email reply. As a very reputable seller myself on EBAY, I am
really appauled by this. I have learned a valuable lesson, however and
will be more careful with who I do business with.

Thanks again for the info, perhaps my experience can prevent someone else
from getting cheated in the future. Most people are basically good, but
there are always a few bad ones out there. The fact that this guy, who
used to frequent these groups, has not tried to defend his name here just
adds to the belief that it was intentional on his part.

Maybe it would be wise to offer some general advice now to those who want to
protect future purchases. What would be the most secure and insured way to
purchase something from someone long distance where you can't really come
knocking on their door if they never deliver?

Payment Methods
CASH - No good, not traceable.
MONEY ORDER - I've heard PO money orders are pursued....but to what extent?
PERSONAL CHECK - Someone has to sign it and cash it, but there is a little
more work involved here to track people down.
CREDIT CARD - I would think this is the most secure since there are
signatures/transaction reference numbers available.

What info to gather before payments are sent?

How about getting a recipt of your order with the seller's address on it
before a payment is sent.
Confirmation of payment received will also help, but how do you insure it
happens?

I guess one good idea is to get everything in writing before hand, and make
sure a good paper trail can be followed if need be.
Also, prompt and friendly communication before sending a payment should be a
high priority on everyone's requirement list.

Any more ideas?

Sincerely,
Brett Walach

Well, I think if you want to know possibly where to find him, I did some
searching on the internet and found this article..
On his website, he lists Akron, Ohio as a shipping location, along with his
email address containing mfmurdock.

I think the below article pieces it together for you...

Rob

P.S. - I had been to his site last night. I just picked up a Vectrex system
at a garage sale yesterday for $5 with 5 games/overlays. The Star Trek
overlay is a bit damaged.

Industrial accident hospitalizes man
AKRON: A 31-year-old Green man was in serious condition at Akron General
Medical Center last night after being injured in an industrial accident
Monday. Michael J. Prine was trapped in a conveyor belt cutter at Murdock
Industrial Inc. at 310 Water St. in Akron about noon. He sustained injuries
to his ribs and legs, according to police records.

The company, which makes conveyor belts and hydraulic hoses, is
investigating how the accident happened. The machinery involved in the
accident appears to be working properly, said Tony Price, the company's
president.

Hey there, you may be on to something! His EBAY about me page at
http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/mfmurdock lists this interesting quote:

" If you need anything in the way of Conveyorbelt, Industrial Hose, Hydraulic
Hose (Aeroquip) or Gaskets, I have been in the field for 12 years and know it
well! I would be glad to help you in what I do for a living"

I will give it a shot!

I will also add that I received a reply from him yesterday (asked him
yesterday) about an inquiry of mine on getting overlays from him.

He said he wasn't doing that anymore.

I've been in contact with a couple of you and the ones that were rude- well
thanks for the new vocabulary... I talked with someone the other day that
suggested I put up on the net what my predicament is and hopefully will get
good suggestions.

If you all remember I was going to do a final run on the overlays, I posted
up on the net that anyone that wanted in on them I was getting out and I was
excited to do a final blowout with the overlays and get a laser printer with
the $$ from everyone...

That's exactly what I did, my balance got up to the point where I made a bid
on a laser printer off ebay, used the finances from my paypal account to
purchase the printer from a guy named Eddie Lagerye in Florida, and sat back
and waited for my printer to arrive... it was supposed to be insured and he
didn't insure it. It arrived from Fed Ex and was smashed. I called him and
told him and the unit was sent back to him- what was that, the month of may?
So since then he keeps saying he is going to get me a replacement sent from
Ricoh since he works for Tiger Direct, is a senior buying manager and has
good ties to Ricoh.... well, every week I talk to him in some form or another
and he keeps saying that he is sending or is being sent... So you see where I
am- Paypal wouldn't protect me and I got the same response that all of you
did... paypal in my opinion is worthless and since I used paypal money, not
my credit card I couldn't even try to contest the charges. In fact, it just
looks like Paypal sends one semi threatening email, a second that tells you
that you will loose you account status, and then emails you and tells you
that the case is closed and since there was no money in the account, that's
it. Well, in my case that was it.

In case any of you are wondering, I have the materials- overlay material, and
sticky backed whites, but no way to print the overlays until this guy sends
the printer- It is my intention to send- but not until I can do so, oh by the
way, the way I used to print them, the printer went down and is unfixable, so
I was getting the laser to print faster and better- I want to send these to
the few people I owe these to, but cannot until I get the printer- so I look
like the fraud and I'm just trying to do the thing I loved most which was to
help not hurt the classic gamers.

I don't know what to do, can't ship till I get the printer and feel like a
fool for trusting ebay, paypal, and this guy. I appologize and if I ever do
get this printer I plan on sending, but cannot until I get it.

In my last transmission with this guy which was a little over a week ago- I
have quoted it below. I told him I would call his place of work and post to
the newsgroups hoping that that would spark his getting the printer to me- So
if anyone has any suggestions on a better way to do this let me know, but I'm
in this thing just like you and have my hands tied until Eddie fulfills his
obligations to me.

Tony, I have NOT forgotten you or your situation. Ricoh has been screwing
around with me in scheduling a pickup for the defective unit in my garage
and will not ship a new one to you till they have picked this one up.

By the way, I don't appreciate all your notations below. This is a personal
sale I made that has NOTHING to do with my employer. Why would speaking to
my boss resolve anything?

I understand the frustration and problems you are having but you have to
consider that they were caused by your returning the machine back to Miami.
If you had called tech support @ Ricoh yourself or gotten me involved when
you still had the machine, they would have replaced it for you without it
being sent back via Fedex.

I should have a resolution today because the Ricoh sales manager helping me
work this out with Ricoh support will be here this AM.

I am NOT avoiding you. Feel free to call me or e-mail me anytime.
Unfortunately I am hard to get a hold of sometimes.

Thanks!

Some of the people I was going to make the overlays for and print out with
the printer have
gotten quite irate with me, so I gave them your name, email address, and cel
phone number, both
email addresses, that I've received from you. I was hoping that you were
going to send me the
printer without me having to have your email/cel/name plastered in every
newgroup and listing the
Tiger Direct name with it, but, I figured that it has gotten very close to
the point of no return
and this seemed like a good way to get your attention. I have thought, and
still might, call up
Tiger Direct's 800 number and seeing if I could track you down and maybe see
about talking to your
supervisor/manager/boss and telling him the situation... well, that's next,
for now, I'm going to
see if the newsgroups can other people out there have any solutions for me-

I will post a status update and let them know that a printer was received...
as soon as I do
receive it... so, please ship the printer, get it over with and just do
it... then you won't have
to worry about me or this whole stupid printer thing again. I know I'll be
glad if it ever gets
resolved.

Yeah, but the thing is that we didn't send you money as an INVESTMENT Tony, we
made a PURCHASE. Show me where I signed up for giving you money TO BUY A PRINTER
that was assumed that you already had?? I never agreed to that. I made a
purchase from you and now you are obligated to follow through with the product as
promised or issue a refund. No where did I agree to terms like "If I don't get
my printer I can't provide the product". If you weren't able to provide the
goods WHEN YOU ADVERTISED THEM, then you have misled us all. What happened with
our money after we sent it to you is not relevant, you got it, PERIOD. I don't
recall seeing anything that said the sale of the overlays was contingent on you
buying a printer from another party. I'm sorry you spent our money on something
and had a problem, but why not just tell us you lost our money at the craps table
so now you can't do the overlays? It's the same thing because it doesn't really
matter what happened to the money, you got it from us and that's all that
counts. What you did with it afterward is your business. The fact that you made
a bad business decision after the fact is totally irrelevant.

What does this guy do, just cut and paste the same "explanation" over
several postings?
