These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on the dates
indicated below, and should be interpreted accordingly. If any
answers have changed due to newer news, you are still expected to
give the answers that were correct on that date.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Bill Psychs and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation of
current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting of
other rounds. For further information see my 2017-09-25 companion
posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

* Game 7 (2018-03-05), Round 1 - Current Events

1. On Tuesday, it was announced that the creator of a tasty to-go
snack had died. He created it in 1964 in Winnipeg, and
eventually his partner sold the business to Pillsbury. What is
the name of this snack food?

2. What is the name of the White House Communications Director
who resigned this week?

3. Following a dramatic shift in position, Donald Trump said to
Republicans: "They have great power over you people. They have
less power over me." Which organization was Trump referring to?

4. Trump announced import tariffs on two products this week.
Name either.

5. Europe's weather usually approaches eastward from the Atlantic,
keeping conditions mostly temperate, but that pattern has
temporarily reversed, bringing a frigid system from Asia to
the west. What have meteorologists -- or newscasters, at least
-- been calling this system?

6. In the House of Commons, 7 of the 10 Bloc Québécois MPs quit
the party to protest their leader, Martine Ouellet. How are
these now-independent members collectively referring to
themselves?

resigned on Monday. What new role is he taking on, which was
announced on Tuesday?

8. On Thursday, Ontario's ban on the door-to-door sale of some
products and services came into effect -- name any one of the
things affected.

9. What Ontario city was subject to a hooded mob that broke windows
and threw rocks and eggs on Saturday night?

10. The 2018 federal budget was released on Tuesday. Within
$1,000,000,000, what is the projected federal deficit for the
2018-19 fiscal year?

* Game 8 (2018-03-12), Round 1 - Current Events

1. On Saturday, residents of <answer 9 above> gathered to
show support for businesses vandalized by anarchists last week.
On what *street*?

2. Also on Saturday, Doug Ford eventually won the Ontario
Progressive Conservative leadership race. While contentious,
the race did receive a record number of votes, over 40% higher
than the previous record from 2002. Within 2,000, how many
votes were cast?

3. US president Trump has exempted Canada and Mexico from the
newly announced tariffs on <answer 4 above>. After meeting
with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, he is apparently set to
exempt another country. Which one?

4. Due to concerned about their use of electricity, Colin Read has
proposed an 18-month moratorium on cryptocurrency mining farms
in the city where he is mayor -- Plattsburgh, in what US state?

5. The Paralympic Winter Games opened this week. Who was Canada's
flag-bearer?

6. As of the close of play on Saturday, Canada had 4 medals in
those games. One was gold -- in what sport?

(Wow! It's a real struggle to remember who quit/was fired two weeks ago.

pharmacare program. (Anything along these lines was acceptable.)

Air cleaners, air conditioners, air purifiers, duct cleaning,
furnaces, water filters, water heaters, water purifiers, water
softeners, water treatment devices.

In the original game the question said that "four services" were
affected and the expected answer listed four of the above products.
After protests were accepted, I went to the provincial government's
web site and found the complete list as shown above.

Hamilton.

$18,100,000,000. (Accepting $17,000,000,000 to $19,100,000,000,
as that's what was done in the original game. Apparently what they
really did was to allow a rounded total within the indicated range.)

64,053. (Accepting 62,000 to 66,100, as was done in the original
game -- cf. answer 10 above).

They used online voting, with a ranked ballot, and it came down to
third preference before Ford beat Christine Elliott 6,202-6,049.
The total is less than 64,053 because of a weighting system that
scaled down the votes in any riding where over 100 people voted.

Yes, a geography question in current events. And #3 didn't require
you to know anything about the current negotiations either. All
I can say is, I didn't write it.

Here's one commentator saying that the case is essentially political:

Martin Shkreli. 4 for Dan, Marc, Jason, Joshua, and Pete.

The drug was Daraprim, which has begun to be used against AIDS.
If Wikipedia is correct, the increased US price is more than
1,000,000% above the current price in some countries where it is
available generically, i.e. no longer patented. (I don't know
about Canada.)

Good guessing.

According to the timestamps, Dan's answers were posted six days before you posted the questions, which may explain why you didn't see them!

In that case, *very* good guessing! :-)

Right, postings with that error are likely to not be blocked from propagation.

I'm still waiting for an emailed copy.
