Could you folks out there suggest songs with the word "PURPLE" in the
title?
I need to put together an audio collage, centered around the theme of
purple: so, if you could name the song, the artist/group who performed it,
and perhaps the album it's on, I would be most appreciative...
What I have so far:
PURPLE RAIN Prince
PURPLE TOUPEE They Might Be Giants
PURPLE HAZE Jimi Hendrix, Kronos Quartet, The Bobs, etc...
Any other ideas?

And in reply I say:
Well, there's a one that I can think of off the top of my head...
One-Eyed, One-Horned, Flying, Purple-People-Eater
by (I forget)
but it's on Dr. Demento's 20th Anniversary album.

Actually, there's a version of that song by Nino Tempo and April Stevens that
hit number one back in the early sixties. I think it's actually from some
Broadway musical, but I have no idea which one.

At home I have one of those "Pebbles"-type compilations of weird sixties punk
singles (by freaky bands nobody's ever heard of) which contains a song called
"Voices Green and Purple". I think the album is "Mayhem and Psychosis Volume
Two". I have the song in my head, but the name of the group performing it
escapes me... There's another song on the album called "Orange Rooftop of Your
Mind" if you're planning an orange-themed escapade. More info after I check
my references...

I looked this up a few months ago in Joel Whitburn's "Pop Memories
(1890-1954)." According to that reference, it was a #1 hit for
Larry Clinton and His Orchestra, #14 for Bing Crosby, and #9 for Guy
Lombardo, all in 1939. There was a note that it was written several
years earlier as a piano solo; there was no mention of a Broadway musical.
