I heard that Carl Reiner, during the second season, randomly alternated
between the ottoman tripping opener and the safely bypassing the ottoman
opener in order to get people to watch the show, just to find out whether
Rob trips or not.

My daughter, an avid NICK at NITEer, says that since Rob is the HEAD writer he
has to stay at the office later. Or maybe he had to go pick up dessert. Or maybe
he's not really Rob, maybe he's a tyloite(?) trying to fool them. -- well maybe not,
because he had thumbs when he shook their hands.

The first season's shows opened with still pictures. The second, third,
and fourth opened with the famous trip. The final season had him
sidestepping the trap.

I fell into this thread kind of late I'm sure, so if this question has
already been answered forgive me....
but concerning THAT footstool....
WHY did he fall over it???
Did Dick happen to trip over and they just decided to use it on the
show or what??
I bought the Dick Van Dyke show book hoping it would answer this
long plagueing question but I don't think it was mentioned...
Does anyone out there know??

Or has Dr. Wil Miller speculated that Laura put the footstool in
his path, or maybe Buddy or Sally put it there so Rob would hurt himself
and they could be the head writer??!!!
Dr. Wil help me :)

BTW, the "footstool" was an "Ottoman".
