These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2015-01-26,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

* Game 3, Round 9 - Entertainment - Iconic Fashion Moments in Film

We'll give you the year of the movie, and the director, and a
brief description of its fashion moment. You name the movie.

1. 1970, Arthur Hiller. Ali MacGraw in a preppy wardrobe of woolly
bobble hats, pea coats, and stripey college attire.

2. 1977, Woody Allen. Diane Keaton in menswear-inspired outfits
of baggy trousers, oversized ties, a big black felt hat, and
a black wool Civil War vest with only the top button done up.

3. 1990, Garry Marshall. Julia Roberts in a brown dress with
white polka-dots, complete with matching hat and gloves.

4. 2001, Wes Anderson. Gwyneth Paltrow in Lacoste tennis dresses,
fur coats, vintage bags, and hair barrettes.

5. 1943, Howard Hughes and an uncredited Howard Hawks. Jane
Russell, wearing a specially designed seamless underwire
brassiere, leaving no visible support lines underneath her
skimpy shirts.

6. 1962, Terence Young. Ursula Andress emerging from the Caribbean
in a white belted bikini.

7. 1955, Billy Wilder. Marilyn Monroe in a halter-neck white dress
blowing up around her legs as she stands over a subway grating.

8. 1961, Blake Edwards. Audrey Hepburn in a little black Givenchy
dress, long black gloves, multi-strand pearls, and sunglasses.

9. 1987, Bruce Robinson. Richard E. Grant in a Harris tweed
overcoat that has a rakish military fit across the chest and
then flares long with high vents.

10. 1974, Jack Clayton. Robert Redford in summer whites, cable
knits, crisp oxfords, and a memorable pale pink linen suit.

* Game 3, Round 10 - Challenge Round - Speaking of "Star Trek"

A. Canadiana: Enterprise

A1. This Canadian businessman cemented his reputation as
a visionary corporate deal-maker after closing Loblaw's
$12,400,000,000 acquisition of Shoppers Drug Mart in 2014.
He serves as President and Executive Chairman of the
merged company. Name him -- first and last name required,
but we'll give you the "Jr."

A2. Who is the CEO of BlackBerry?

B. Science: Bones

B1. What bone disease, most common in post-menopausal women,
results in reduced bone mineral density and increased
likelihood of fractures?

B2. The predominant cause of what childhood disease is a
Vitamin D deficiency? It results in defective mineralization
of bones, potentially leading to fractures and deformity.

C. Sports: Scotties Tournament of Hearts

We need the *first and last names* for both answers.

C1. In 2008, this Manitoba skip led her team to victory in the
Scotties Tournament of Hearts. She repeated as Team Canada
skip in 2009 and 2010, and in 2014 led the Canadian women's
team to a gold medal at the Sochi Olympics.

C2. Back when it was still the Scott's Tournament of Hearts, this
skip led two women's World Championship teams and six
Tournament of Hearts winning teams, including four in a row
in 2001-04. She is also a reporter and weather presenter
for CBC.

D. Arts & Lit: Chekhov

D1. Anton Chekhov was a Russian playwright and author who is
considered among the greatest short-story writers in history,
but he himself never considered writing to be his principal
profession. What else was he?

D2. The 1896 St. Petersburg debut of "The Seagull" was a
fiasco, and the play's reception stung Chekhov into
renouncing the theater. A Moscow production 2 years later,
directed by a man whose acting technique has been very
influential, was much more successful. Name this director.

E. History: To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before

E1. Who sailed around the southernmost tip of Africa in 1488,
thus becoming the first European known to have reached the
Indian Ocean from the Atlantic?

E2. Who is the first known European explorer to reach the island
then called Van Diemen's Land as well as the ones now called
New Zealand?

F. Entertainment: Cue

F1. Who plays Minnesota Fats in the 1961 movie "The Hustler"?

F2. What character does Paul Newman play in "The Hustler" as
well as "The Color of Money" (1986)? Full name required,
including the nickname.

So the trivial Swedish name is "Engelska sjukan" - English Disease. That
did seem like it would be a good answer in this contest, so I used the
other name in Swedish, which sounds Latin and international, so I
thought it would be good for English too. Oh well.
