> * Game 5, Round 7 - Geography - Official Languages
> I'm sorry, I don't speak -- um -- whatever it is you're speaking.
> The following is a linguistic round, involving official languages
> of various countries (many of which also have other official
> languages). In each case, we give you a language, and you name
> the country, or one of the countries, that officially claims it.
> 1. Khmer.
Cambodia. 4 for Dan Blum, Peter, Björn, Erland, Joshua, Dan Tilque,
Marc, Jeff, and Rob.
> 2. Tagalog.
Philippines. 4 for Dan Blum, Peter, Erland, Joshua, Dan Tilque,
Marc, and Jeff.
> 3. Walloon.
Belgium. 4 for Dan Blum, Peter, Erland, Joshua, Dan Tilque, Marc,
Jeff, and Rob.
I believe Erland was right to say that this one is simply a version of
French and in Belgium is officially called French. Similarly, their
other major language, sometimes called Flemish, is officially Dutch.
> 4. Amharic.
Ethiopia. 4 for Dan Blum, Erland, Joshua, Dan Tilque, and Marc.
> 5. Catalan.
Spain, Andorra. 4 for everyone -- Dan Blum, Peter, Björn, Erland,
Jason, Joshua, Dan Tilque, Marc, Jeff, and Rob.
> 6. Pashto.
Afghanistan. 4 for Dan Blum, Peter, Björn, Erland, Joshua,
Dan Tilque, Marc, and Jeff. 2 for Rob.
> 7. Malagasy.
Madagascar. 4 for Dan Blum, Peter, Erland, Joshua, Dan Tilque,
Marc, Jeff, and Rob.
> 8. Urdu.
Pakistan, (believe it or not) Fiji. 4 for Dan Blum, Peter, Erland,
Joshua, Dan Tilque, Marc, and Jeff.
> 9. Swahili (you have 4 possible answers here).
Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, DR Congo. 4 for Dan Blum (the hard way),
Peter, Björn, Erland, Jason, Joshua (the hard way), Dan Tilque,
Marc, Jeff, and Rob.
> 10. Among this country's 10 official languages are English, Sotho,
> Tsonga, Xhosa, and Zulu.
South Africa. 4 for Dan Blum, Peter, Erland, Joshua, Dan Tilque,
Marc, Jeff, and Rob.
> * Game 5, Round 8 - Science - Alternative Sex Acts
> Birds do it, bees do it, even spiny monotremes do it. Let's do it.
> Let's have a trivia round on plant and animal reproduction.
> 1. By what means do mushrooms reproduce?
(Airborne) spores. 4 for Dan Blum, Peter, Joshua, Dan Tilque, Marc,
Jeff, and Rob.
> 2. By what extraterrestrially-influenced process do the eggs and
> sperm of coral meet?
They are ejected and drift together with the tide. Any reference
to drifting in the ocean was sufficient. 4 for Dan Blum, Björn,
Marc, Jeff, and Rob.
> 3. Who's your daddy? -- What is unusual about how the seahorse
> gives birth?
The male gives birth (having received eggs in its pouch from the
female). 4 for everyone.
> 4. Name either of the mammal species that are monotremes, i.e. they
> lay eggs.
Platypus, echidna. 4 for Dan Blum, Peter, Björn, Jason, Joshua,
Dan Tilque, Marc, Jeff (the hard way), and Rob.
> 5. Many species of sharks and fish, including the common guppy,
> platys, and swordtails, are ovoviviparous. What does this mean?
Their eggs "hatch" inside the body so that they then give birth
to live offspring. Any reference to live birth was sufficient,
even though that would fail to make the distinction from viviparous
species like humans. 4 for Dan Blum, Dan Tilque, Marc, and Jeff.
> 6. A male donkey and a female horse produce what offspring?
A mule. 4 for Björn, Erland, Jason, Joshua, Dan Tilque, Marc,
and Rob. 3 for Dan Blum. 2 for Peter.
A "jenny" is a female donkey. If one of those produces an offspring
with a male horse, it's called a *hinny*. As for "ass", that's
another name for donkey.
> 7. When a butterfly drinks from a flower, it brushes against
> the anthers and gets covered with pollen. When the butterfly
> visits another flower, the pollen attaches to what part of that
> other flower? (Despite the name, no trauma usually results.)
The stigma, but this is a part of the pistil and the hint could relate
to either. Unlike the original game, I'm accepting either answer.
4 for Rob, Dan Blum, Joshua, and Marc.
> 8. The male reproductive organ of a flowering plant is called what?
Stamen. 4 for Dan Blum, Peter, Joshua, Marc, and Rob.
> 9. Where are a snail's reproductive organs?
In its head, or more precisely, its neck. "On top" was not specific
enough. 4 for Dan Tilque and Marc.
> 10. An earthworm needs another earthworm to reproduce despite that
> fact that it's already equipped with what?
Both male and female sex organs, i.e. it's a hermaphrodite.
4 for Dan Blum, Peter, Björn, Jason, Joshua, Dan Tilque, Marc,
Jeff, and Rob.
