These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2015-06-08,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Five Guys Named Moe, and
are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
see my 2015-08-18 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

* Game 7, Round 4 - Canadiana Sports - Sour Grapes, or Don Cherry Quotes

1. Who was Don Cherry referring to when he said: "A million
comedians starving to death and you're trying to be one"?

2. Name the former Leafs coach that Don Cherry referred to as
"Napoleon", "arrogant", "pompous", and "a typical American".
This coach was hired in 2008 and fired on 2012-03-08.

3. For this question, we are going to ask you to finish the quote.
In 1989, in reference to Winnipeg Jets assistant coach Alpo
Suhonen, Cherry said: "Alpo? Isn't that a...?" A what?

4. In 2004 Cherry said: "Most of the guys who wear them are
Europeans and French guys. And you cannot have half the league
wear them and half not." What piece of equipment was Cherry
referring to?

5. What sports league was the nationalistic Don Cherry referring
to when he said the following? "The best thing about this game,
there's no Russians or Swedes playing."

6. During the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, a Member of Parliament
complained about seeing too many Canadian flags, and Cherry
responded by saying: "They don't like the Canadian flag.
You know it's funny, they don't want the Canadian flag but they
want our money." What party did the MP who made the complaint
belong to?

7. In October 1991 Don Cherry said: "They don't want our
signs... they don't want our language and then they can't
understand why an 18-year-old kid from Ontario doesn't want to
go there. Get with it." Who was the 18-year-old kid Cherry
was referring to?

8. Name the Russian-born sniper who led the NHL in goal scoring
in the 2008-09 season. Don Cherry said this about him: "I am
predicting somebody's going to get him. And somebody's going to
get him good. There's somebody out there -- some big defenseman
is going to be sitting in the weeds. As he cuts across center
ice, somebody's going to cut him in half."

9. In March 2003 Don Cherry and Ron MacLean had a raucous debate
that lasted an entire segment of "Coach's Corner". Their
argument became a national news story. At one point during
the debate Cherry said: "I hate to see them go it alone.
We have a country that comes to our rescue, and we're just
riding their coattails". What were they arguing about?

10. Don Cherry wore a flamboyant pink jacket to the inauguration
of former Mayor Rob Ford. His remarks inspired "left-wing
pinko" and "bike-riding pinko" buttons. Name the urban-focused
quarterly *magazine* that created the buttons.

This was the easiest round in the original game.

> 1. Who was Don Cherry referring to when he said: "A million
> comedians starving to death and you're trying to be one"?

Ron MacLean.

> 2. Name the former Leafs coach that Don Cherry referred to as
> "Napoleon", "arrogant", "pompous", and "a typical American".
> This coach was hired in 2008 and fired on 2012-03-08.

Ron Wilson.

> 3. For this question, we are going to ask you to finish the quote.
> In 1989, in reference to Winnipeg Jets assistant coach Alpo
> Suhonen, Cherry said: "Alpo? Isn't that a...?" A what?

Dog food, duh. 4 for Dan Blum, Marc, Pete, Joshua, and Dan Tilque.

> 4. In 2004 Cherry said: "Most of the guys who wear them are
> Europeans and French guys. And you cannot have half the league
> wear them and half not." What piece of equipment was Cherry
> referring to?

Visors. I scored "face masks" as almost correct. 3 for Joshua.

> belong to?

Bloc Québécois, duh. I scored their provincial affiliates the PQ as
almost correct (even though it would then of course have been an MNA
who complained, not an MP). 4 for Joshua. 3 for Dan Blum.
