COLLEGE NICKNAMES has returned to the Internet!
Yikes. This list is REALLY long. This is by far the longest list of college
nicknames I think I have ever seen. Remember, it is by no means exhuastive...
look at the very bottom of the list. Thanks to all who contributed to this
massive compilation...
Schools from any athletic divison are accepted. This also applies to the NAIA.
However, no junior colleges (jucos) nor community colleges (CCs) will be
included here; if they were, the list would *REALLY* be ridiculously long.
Any comments, questions, et cetera, can be e-mailed to me, Adam Joshua Smargon,
here at RECY...@ufcc.ufl.edu. However, do NOT send updates and the like to me
with the entire list! If you do, I'll delete it in a heartbeat. Simply say to
add this college or that nickname. I've gotten too many people who updated me
like that, and I couldn't find what they specifically wanted me to add.
Have fun with the list!
This is a list of nicknames/mascots for colleges in the United States.
"U" by itself is the abbreviation for the word "University." The common word
"Fighting" has been eliminated, because so many schools un/officially have that
word before their actual team name.

A separate note regarding Trinity College. I have two nicknames listed for this
school: the Chieftains, and the Panthers. Now, it's not uncommon for the same
name of a school to be in more than one state: St. Thomas U and Monmouth
College are examples. Trinity College exists in four places: in Hartford,
Connecticut (listed above as the Bantams), in Washington, D.C., in Deerfield,
Illinois, and in Burlington, Vermont. So -- what nicknames match up with
which Trinity College? Please note that Trinity U is not Trinity College, which
is listed separately under "Tigers."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ditto regarding St. Joseph's College. I have one listed as the Monks (in North
Windham, Maine), one in Rennsselaer, Indiana, and one in Brooklyn, New York.
What are the nicknames of the St. Joseph's Colleges of Indiana and New York?
Please note that St. Joseph's College is not St. Joseph's University (located in
Philadelphia), which are listed separately as the Hawks. Furthermore, please
note that St. Joseph's is not Mt. St. Joseph's, which is listed separately
under "Lions."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ditto regarding Union College. I have four Union Colleges listed: as the
Dutchmen in Schenectady, New York, somewhere (else) in America as the Bulldogs,
in Barbourville, Kentucky, in Lincoln, Nebraska, and in Cranford, New Jersey.
Please note that Union College is not Union University, which is located in
Jackson, Tennessee. I don't know Union U's nickname either.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Are there any schools with the nickname of "Red Devils"?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We got major headaches here on Concordia College. One source tells me that 7
cities have a Concordia College. They are River Forest, IL, Ann Arbor, MI, St.
Paul, MN, Moorhead, MN, Bronxville, NY, Portland, OR, and Milwaukee, WI. A 2nd
source says that one exists in Nebraska (called the Bulldogs), and one exists
in North Dakota or Moorhead, MN (called the Cobbers). Help! End the confusion!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Santa Fe, New Mexico, is it the College of Santa Fe or the University of
Santa Fe? (Not to be confused with Santa Fe Community College in Santa Fe, New
Mexico, or with Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What's the official name of the school called East New Mexico U or Eastern New
Mexico? Their nickname is the Greyhounds. Please let me know...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is the State U of New York-Buffalo the Bulls? What's the difference (if any)
between the State U of New York-Buffalo and State U of New York-College at
Buffalo, and what are their specific nicknames? An independent source tells me
that the Bengals are the nickname of Buffalo State College. Is this the same
thing as State U of New York-College at Buffalo? This one is confusing...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, here's one on Antioch. Antioch College in Ohio are the Radicals, and
there is an Antioch U in Los Angeles. Now some sources say that there are OTHER
Antioch schools in America -- Antioch in the state of New Hampshire, and
Antioch U in Seattle. End the confusion! Do these schools actually exist?
Where? What are their official names and nicknames? Please let me know...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note the specific spelling on this one: Is William Paterson College (nickname as
yet unknown) the same thing as the William Patterson Pioneers? Is there a
difference between either of those and William Paterson of New Jersey?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Are Hartwick College the Bears or Warriors?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Salukis is the nickname of Southern Illinois University. I recently learned
two campuses exist: Carbondale and Edwardsville. Which is the Salukis, and what
is the other campus's nickname?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had Mount St. Mary's listed under the nickname "Mountaineers." Was that the
state of Maryland or California? (It's probably Maryland, because California
really doesn't have any mountains. But I want to be sure.) Furthermore, what
is the nickname for the other Mount St. Mary's? (Please note this is NOT Mount
St. Mary, in the state of New York.) Please let me know...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I previously listed "Pacific" under the nickname Tigers. Is this the same
thing as the U of the Pacific in California? Please let me know...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is Morehead College (in Kentucky, nickname unknown) the same as Morehead State
College (location unknown, nickname: Eagles)? Another source of mine lists the
following, which conflicts with the above: Morehead State is in Kentucky. This
one in particular is confusing. Please let me know...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is North Dakota State University the Bison or the Thundering Herd?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is Livingston College-Rutgers U (nickname unknown at this point) the same thing
as Livingston University (the Tigers?) Please let me know...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These following names are nicknames for schools in the U.S. which I've heard of,
but I can't remember what school or schools they belong to. If you know it,
please send me e-mail. If you know of a mascot that belongs to an American
college, but unsure of what school or schools it belongs to, e-mail it to me
and I will add it to this part of the list.
Sun Bears: (I think a campus of the University of California system)
86ers: (I think somewhere in California)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These following schools I do not have a nickname for. If you know it, please

me and I will add it to this part of the list.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe "Wahoos" is an
UNofficial nickname. Of course, maybe the list is for both
official and unofficial names, I don't know. If it is for
both, though, I have a lot more to add to it.

Add to the list: Earlham College (An NAIA team, regularly slaughtered
in football by powerhouses such as Wooster, Oberlin, and Kenyon), whose
teams are officially called the "Hustling Quakers," but are more often
called the "Fighting Quakers."

As the list compiler, I know that. However, had you actually read the header
before the actual list, you would have seen the following:
--This is a list of nicknames/mascots for colleges in the United States.
--"U" by itself is the abbreviation for the word "University." The common
--word "Fighting" has been eliminated, because so many schools un/officially
--have that word before their actual team name.
Got it? My school, the U of Florida, are the "Fighting Gators," but for
brevity and clarification, I shortened it. You must be the umpteenth fan
of Notre Dame to complain to me about this one little thing. Get a clue!
> Add to the list: Earlham College (An NAIA team, regularly slaughtered

Consider it added to the list.

The official University nickname is "Tar Heels"; since it's hard to
dress up like a tar heel, there is also a mascot, a ram. At football
games a live ram, named Rameses, makes appearances; recently a rather
goofy-looking costumed ram was introduced for other events. The team
is certainly not known as "the Rams." An analogous case is Alabama;
their nickname is "Crimson Tide" but their mascot is an elephant.
Here at Stanford, another school with a color for a nickname, we
have a tree for a mascot. Perhaps someone would like to compile
a separate list of mascots. I also recently saw a thread about schools
that modify the nickname for women's teams, esp. in ways other than
just prepending "Lady" to the nickname.
This project keeps getting bigger, doesn't it? A good use for internet,
gleaning information from all over the country.

There is a difference between a nickname and a mascot:

Some schools have mascots that embody their nicknames and some do not.
UNC's nickname is "Tar Heels" and their mascot is a ram.
There is no Tar Heel mascot and their nickname is _never_ Rams.

I have it listed as California State U-San Jose. It is common lingo
for a school officially named as California State University at ________
to be simply called ______ State. Example: California State University
at Fresno is abbreviated to either Cal State-Fresno, or just Fresno
State. There IS a difference between the University of California at
_________ and California State University at __________. Some really
big cities in Calfornia actually have both. Example: UCLA is the
University of California at Los Angeles. CSULA (or Cal State-L.A. or
LA State) is the California State University at Los Angeles. They are two
separate schools, two separate campuses. California is on a three-tier
system.... (1) The University of California at __________
(2) California State University at __________
(3) community colleges and junior colleges in California
Examples of rather well-known University of California schools are:
UCLA (Univ of Cal at Los Angeles)
Cal or UCB or Cal-Berkeley (Univ of Cal at Berkeley)
Examples of rather well-known California State University schools are:
SJSU or San Jose State (Cal St Univ at San Jose)
SDSU or San Diego State (Cal St Univ at San Diego)
Fresno State (Cal St Univ at Fresno)
and so on and so on...
I hope I did not sound condescending.... it's just that most people
don't know about this system, and I hope to educate the masses.

And how would you write the Ohio State University at Cleveland?
Delta State University's mascot is _not_ the "Fighting Okra."
There has been a movement (jokingly?) to call their athletic teams
the "Fighting Okra," but the Alumni won't go for it.
Delta State's athletic teams are referred to as the "Statesmen."
And women are called "Lady Statesmen."
--James Kennedy
You are mostly right, but it is definitely true that some Cal State schools
go by "California State University, Blah" while others go by "Blah State
University". For example, I have *never* (until your post ;-)) seen
San Diego State University or San Jose State University referred to as
"Cal State Univ San Diego" or "Cal State Univ San Jose".
In contrast, I have never seen "Cal State Univ Northridge" or "Cal State
Univ Dominguez Hills" referred to as "Northridge State" or "Dominguez
Hills State". I'm not sure about the "official" status of these names,
but it is clear that in actual use different universities in the Cal State
system use one version of the name to the exclusion of the other.
On the other hand, I *have* seen "Cal State Long Beach" also referred to
as "Long Beach State".
Not meaning to be picky, and not meaning to flame, but I have NEVER
heard of SJSU going by Cal St Univ at San Jose. I am an alumni (and it
took me 6 years to get there!), and it was never reffered to anywhere as
Cal State......
I seem to remember there is some type of distinction in the school
system as to what the name of the school is. For example, schools
that go by the Cal State at ??? have different funding or something
than schools that go by the ?? State University convention. I believe
that, in general, the State Universities are cheaper to attend than the
Cal State schools.

OK, OK, I admit it. I made a mistake. Let's correct it, then.
I think the absolute best thing to do would be to contact the State of
California Department of Education in Sacramento and determine, once and for
all, the EXACT name of EVERY public school in the state (and private, as long
as we are at it), what cities they are found in, and their nicknames. This
will take care of the whole state of California for the list. As the list
compiler, this saves me one big headache. I'll send the letter -- by SNAIL
mail, even -- to the appropriate person or entity in Sacramento. I got one
question, though...
Could some kind soul on the Internet in California please send to me (or post
here) who I need to specifically send the letter to?... Even better... do they
have an e-mail account? THAT would be REALLY great...
Sincerely,

A friend of mine who graduated from San Jose State in the late 1970s informed
me that for a brief period while he was there, SJSU was called California
State University at San Jose. He still has that on his resume because he
thinks it sounds more prestigious.

There's a single prospectus available on the Cal State schools. You
can probably get it on microfiche at your local library.

You could do that, or you could go to your library and get a copy of Peterson's
Guide to Four Year Colleges or Peterson's Guide to Graduate and Professional
Study. The latter is a multi-volume guide with an overview of schools and
programs as its first volume. Every year (spring for undergrad guides and
summer for grad guides), the Guides are updated by sending a survey to
each school, and to many divisions within the larger schools. A team of
editors makes calls to verify the information in a survey, and if a survey
isn't returned -- particularly from one of the larger schools -- an editor will
call an administrator listed on the previous year's survey to get the new
information. It's one of the most reliable sources around for information
on schools -- it's even more reliable than the stuff from Educational Testing
Service (the SAT people).

SJSU is definitely part of the California State University
system. The older larger campuses like San Jose State, San Diego
State, and San Francisco State resist using their "official" names.
The campuses that are "Polytechnic" actually are the ones that can use
their old names officially. My guess is that SDSU, SJSU, SFSU will
continue as names for a long time.

I think I just figured out what the original (?) poster was asking.
There are three main divisions of *public* secondary education in
California (if memory from High School civics class serves):
The University of California (UC)
The California State University (CSU, or State)
Community Colleges
Time for the standard disclaimer: I'm not an expert and I don't work
for the state... I've attended both UC and CSU and am trying to explain
accurately from memory. My information may be outdated or incorrect;
I mean no harm by this and am only trying to answer a question as best
I can. [ Disclaimer mode off. ]
The University of California includes UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Riverside,
UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC San Francisco, and UC Irvine.
I may be leaving one out, but I don't think I am. Apologies to those I
may have inadvertently omitted.
The UC system is supposed to admit the top 8% of graduating high school
seniors in California (however, this percentage may have changed since
I was a senior in HS!) It is considered to be "a cut above" the state
school system since its admission policies are tougher. Its faculty is
supposed to be composed of a higher percentage of PhDs than the state
system, but I don't have statistics on this. UC was also considerably
more expensive than the state system at the time I attended.
Next is the CSU system with the 20 campuses listed in my previous post.
It is supposed to admit the top 23% of graduating high school seniors.
(Again, percentages may have changed.) As to which is more expensive,
UC or CSU, I'm not sure, since CSU is cheaper on a yearly basis, but
it may take more years to graduate due to inability to get classes
in certain majors.
The community college system is supposed to admit everyone and is the
least expensive alternative ($10/unit for those without a secondary
degree, last time I checked).
Hope this helps someone and has offended no one! ;-)

Off the top of my head, I can think of two schools which do this. Southern

whose women's hoops team could beat their men's team, are the Lady Techsters,
not the Bulldogs. Does anyone know any others?

Centenary College's (Louisiana) mens teams are the "Gents" (Gentlemen). Naturally

p.s. For those who don't know, Robert Parish of the Boston Celtics is a
Centenary alum.

No, this nickname is indeed the official one of the Virginia
Polytechnic Institute (also known as Virginia Tech). They are
officially the Hokies, though they still have the turkey as a
mascot...
Every Big East Football publication has referred to them as the
"Hokies" and that is how ESPN referred to them during the Independence
Bowl appearance this season....
