Here's a nice little trivia question I heard the other day:

There are two men who were classmates at college: same university, same
year. They were both named Rookie of the Year in their respective sport
(professional) in the same year. And, one of the men's FIRST NAME is the
same as the other man's LAST NAME.

Who are these men?

Please post answers if you figure it out, no need to email.

Yes, I'm sure they he and Bo were there together. The only part I'm unsure of is Bo's
first name. It couldn't be Jackson Frank Thomas, could it?

Wow! What a great question.
I am still thinking about it, but I know the answer given above
is incorrect. Neither Thomas nor Bo Jackson were ever ROTY (and
Bo's given name was Vincent Edward).

I'll keep thinking.

Thanks! Got it from my dad, who got it at work. I loved it. I got it,
but with the benefit of being able to ask yes/no questions, like "Was it
in the 80's" or something like that. No, I won't take questions here.

% Bo's given name was Vincent Edward).

Correct. As an update on the traffic so far, Frank Thomas and Bo Jackson
are NOT the right answer. Bo's first name is VINCENT.

Hmmm...don't think Swannie was ever ROTY.

I thought I was pretty close when I remembered Mark Jackson won
the NBA ROTY in 1988, same year as Keith Jackson won for NFL.
But they have same *last* name, which isn't what the question
asked. (Also, I think Mark Jackson played for Georgetown, and
they don't have much of a football program).

I'll go *way* out on a limb here. What about 1970?
AFC ROTY was Buffalo QB Dennis Shaw.
And NASCAR ROTY was a guy named Bill Dennis.

I don't know many stock car drivers who went to college, but it's
worth a shot.
(If I get this right, it will be a good omen, and I will score at
least 25,000 on NTN SPorts Trivia tonight) :-)))

From my friend, the trivia-man, Dean Sadowski (who is underprivileged, and has
no news reader) how about Fred Lynn and Lynn Swann? We believe that they
both went to Southern Cal, and we know Fred was AL ROY in '75, and Lynn was
on the Steelers in '75. Not positive about ROY, though.

DING! Winnah!

Fred Lynn and Lynn Swann, both USC '74, were, indeed, Rookies of the Year
in 1975 in the AL and NFL, respectively. Well done. By the way, Fred
became the only rookie to win MVP in Major League Baseball, and nobody
else has done it since.

Actually, Mark Jackson played for St. John's, I'm pretty sure. I'm

Ahhhhh.... NO. Good effort, though.

According to my World Almanac (which, as has been discussed in other
threads, is not infallible), the NFL Rookies of the Year for 1975 were
Steve Bartkowski (NFC) and Robert Brazile (AFC). Perhaps more than
one Rookie of the Year Award is given out each year; according to the
Almanac, they are listing recipients of Sporting News's ROTY award.

I can only assume that whoever devised the question (it was not I,
though I posted it) probably used the AP RotY or some other. But a good
point.
