This set of current-events rounds is running concurrently
with Game 5, Rounds 7-8 (and later with Rounds 9-10) of the
same season.

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on the dates
indicated below, and should be interpreted accordingly. If any
answers have changed due to newer news, you are still expected to
give the answers that were correct on those dates.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Unnatural Axxxe, and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see
my companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition
(QFTCI*)".

* Game 7 (2014-11-03), Round 1 - Current Events - The Ghomeshi Edition

1. Former CBC host Jian Ghomeshi was fired from what radio show?

2. Lucy DeCoutere is the first of Ghomeshi's alleged victims to
be publicly identified. Name either of her jobs.

Okay, we were kidding. That's all the Ghomeshi questions.

3. Cyclone Nilofar threatened to be the second in October to hit
what country?

4. A US nurse is defying what state's Ebola-related quarantine
order?

5. Give the turnout in Toronto's municipal election: either the
percentage of those eligible who voted (to the nearest multiple
of 5%) or the gross number of voters (with an equivalent amount
of leeway).

6. Israel will reopen a holy site in the Old City of Jerusalem.
Give either of its names.

7. Under new sentencing guidelines convicted Mountie-killer Justin
Bourque won't be eligible to apply for parole for how long?

8. Who did the Toronto Raptors play in their season-opening game?

9. Rogers Communications is teaming up with which company to try
and draw a younger audience?

10. Axxxe's former crime reporter B.J. del Conte is sure to see
which just-opened movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal?

* Game 8 (2014-11-10), Round 1 - Current Events

1. Name the Manitoba premier who shuffled his cabinet amid a
political rebellion.

2. Why was Canadian solidier Branden Stevenson in the news?

3. Name the long-term Toronto Blue Jay who was traded away in
return for Marco Estrada.

4. Name the Canadian-born, Philippines-raised newly named general
manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

5. Name the Golden Globes co-host, star of TV's "Parks and
Recreation", and all-around funny lady who visited Toronto to
promote her new memoir.

6. Name the musician who was rumored to be putting on a surprise
show at Massey Hall, causing fans to line up for hours in the
rain -- but there was no such show.

7. Name the Canadian bank that announced plans to slash 1,500
employees and close 120 branches.

8. Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz sparked criticism when
he said young people should do what?

9. Name either of the Liberal MPs ousted from caucus amid
allegations of "personal misconduct" involving female NDP MPs.

10. Name the Conservative MP who resigned after being convicted
of electoral improprieties but will still receive a gold-plated
pension.

(What, there were current events outside Canada too?)

"Q".

Actress ("Trailer Park Boys"), RCAF captain (any reference to the
Canadian military was sufficient).

India.

The first was Hudhud, a Category 2 hurricane (as we would say) that
struck the state of Andra Pradesh on October 12. Nilofar grew to
Category 4 strength while at sea and evacuations took place in the
state of Gujarat, but then the storm weakened all the way to wind
speeds of about 25 mph (40 km/h) before reaching land.

Jeff, and Dan Tilque.

Jews call it the Temple Mount; Muslims call it the Noble Sanctuary
or Haram al-Sharif; also accepting the Dome of the Rock, which is
part of it. 4 for everyone.

The last time this happened and I was the only one to give a valid
answer, it actually hurt me in the scoring. While I may have had a
higher score, some of the others' scores went up by more than mine.
Sounds counterintuitive, but that's the way it worked out.

Could be. It all depends on your score on the third-worst round.
