These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2003-01-20,
and should be interpreted accordingly. All questions were written
by members of the Usual Suspects, but have been reformatted and
may have been retyped and/or edited by me. I will reveal the
correct answers in about 3 days.

For further information, including an explanation of the """
notation that may appear in these rounds, see my 2020-06-23
companion posting on "Reposted Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (RQFTCI*)".

I did not write these rounds.

Manga. 4 for Erland, Dan Blum, and Joshua. 3 for Dan Tilque.

Vinegared rice (any reference to rice was sufficient). 4 for Erland,
Dan Blum, and Joshua.

> 4. What is the Japanese art of flower arrangement known as?

Ikebana. 4 for Joshua.

> 5. What is the Japanese art of folding paper into complex shapes

Origami. 4 for everyone -- Erland, Dan Blum, Joshua, and Dan Tilque.

This led to a memorable moment in the 2004 movie "Ella Enchanted".
Trying to bluff an attacker, Ella says, "I think it's only fair
to warn you that I'm practiced in the ancient art of origami!" --
but unfortunately the attacker is also familiar with the word.

Judo (ju = gentle, do = way). 4 for Erland, Dan Blum, and Dan Tilque.

> 7. What is the Japanese martial art that emphasizes punching and

Karate (kara = empty, te = hand). 4 for everyone.

Cherry blossom. 4 for Erland and Dan Blum. 3 for Joshua.

Fast-twitch, slow-twitch. 4 for Dan Tilque.

Smooth/involuntary, skeletal/striated/striped/voluntary.

> 4. During normal or aerobic muscle metabolism, glycogen, a major

The answer we wanted was ATP (adenosine triphosphate), but after
almost everyone in 2008 said glucose, I looked it up and found
that glucose is indeed produced during the breakdown process.
So I'm accepting either answer. 4 for Dan Blum (the hard way)
and Dan Tilque.

Lactic acid (not accepting "lactose", a different substance).
4 for Erland and Dan Blum.

> 6. In which part of the body would you find the gastrocnemius

Calf (lower leg).

Quadriceps. 4 for Dan Blum and Dan Tilque.

Rotator cuff.

Trapezius.
