These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2018-03-12,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Bill Psychs and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see
my 2017-09-25 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

* Game 8, Round 2 - Canadiana History - Canada on the World Stage

Here is a round on Canada's role in global affairs.

1. In 1987, an international "Protocol on Substances that Deplete
the Ozone Layer" was agreed to, which has led to the ozone hole
over Antarctica slowly recovering. *What Canadian city* is the
protocol named for?

2. Canada was an early proponent of the International Criminal
Court. What is the name of the *Canadian lawyer* who served
as a judge of the ICC from 2003 to 2009 and was the Court's
first president?

3. Who was the Canadian Force Commander of the United Nations
Assistance Mission for Rwanda?

4. Canada isn't involved in many border disputes with other
countries. However, both Canada and *what other country*
both make claim to Hans Island in the Arctic?

5. Lester B. Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize largely for his
role in resolving *what 1956 event*?

6. Who was the *Canadian foreign-affairs minister* in 1997 at the
time of the signing of the Convention on the Prohibition of the
Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines
and on their Destruction, known informally as the Ottawa Treaty?

7. One of Canada's most controversial peacekeeping missions occurred
in 1993. Canadian troops came under fire and two paratroopers
beat and tortured a local teenager to death. In *what country*
did this mission take place?

8. Until recently, Canada was one of the world's largest exporters
of a product now considered dangerous, with the vast majority of
the exports going to developing countries where workers didn't
always have the training to use it safely. What product?

9. Name the *Canadian lawyer* who is currently the UN Special
Representative for International Migration, was previously
the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and was the Chief
Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunals for the
former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.

10. In 2007, Canada was one of four countries to vote against a UN
declaration that 144 countries had supported. In 2016, Canada
finally fully adopted this declaration -- on what subject?

* Game 8, Round 3 - Entertainment - Movies Set on Planes

Two weeks ago we had books set on trains. This week we have movies
set on planes -- in each case, give the title.

1. 2012. An airline pilot saves almost all his passengers when
his plane malfunctions and he loses control, but an investigation
into the accident reveals something troubling. (Starring Denzel
Washington, Don Cheadle, and Melissa Leo.)

2. 1996. When terrorists seize control of an airliner, an
intelligence analyst accompanies a commando unit for a mid-air
boarding operation. (Kurt Russell, Steven Seagal, Halle Berry.)

3. 1980. A man afraid to fly must ensure that a plane lands
safely after the pilots become sick. (Robert Stack, Lloyd
Bridges, Leslie Nielsen.)

4. 2005. A bereaved woman and her daughter are flying home
from Berlin to America. At 30,000 feet, the child vanishes,
and nobody will admit she was ever on the plane. (Jodie Foster,
Peter Sarsgaard, Sean Bean.)

5. 1997. Hijackers seize the plane carrying the President of the
United States and his family, but he -- an ex-soldier -- works
from hiding to defeat them. (Harrison Ford, Glenn Close,
Gary Oldman.)

6. 1970. A bomber on board an airplane, an airport almost closed
by snow, and various personal problems of the people involved.
(Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, George Kennedy.)

7. 1992. An airline security expert must take action when he
finds himself trapped on a passenger jet after terrorists seize
control of it. (Bruce Greenwood, Tom Sizemore, Wesley Snipes.)

8. 2006. An FBI agent takes on a plane full of deadly, venomous
reptiles, deliberately released to kill a witness being flown
from Honolulu to Los Angeles to testify against a mob boss.
(Samuel L. Jackson, Julianna Margulies, Kenan Thompson.)

9. 2014. An air marshal springs into action during a transatlantic
flight after receiving a series of text messages demanding
$150,000,000 sent to an offshore account, or someone will die
every 20 minutes. (Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong'o.)

10. 1997. About-to-be-paroled former US Ranger Cameron Poe finds
himself trapped on a prisoner-transport plane when the other
prisoners seize control. (Ving Rhames, John Malkovich,
Nicolas Cage.)

> * Game 8, Round 3 - Entertainment - Movies Set on Planes

> Two weeks ago we had books set on trains. This week we have movies
> set on planes -- in each case, give the title.

> 1. 2012. An airline pilot saves almost all his passengers when
> his plane malfunctions and he loses control, but an investigation
> into the accident reveals something troubling. (Starring Denzel
> Washington, Don Cheadle, and Melissa Leo.)

"Flight". 4 for Joshua and Jason.

He saves them by an outstanding feat of improvisational airmanship --
*while drunk*.

> 2. 1996. When terrorists seize control of an airliner, an
> intelligence analyst accompanies a commando unit for a mid-air
> boarding operation. (Kurt Russell, Steven Seagal, Halle Berry.)

"Executive Decision". 4 for Joshua and Jason.

> 3. 1980. A man afraid to fly must ensure that a plane lands
> safely after the pilots become sick. (Robert Stack, Lloyd
> Bridges, Leslie Nielsen.)

"Airplane!", also known as "Flying High". 4 for Dan Blum, Bruce,
Calvin, Dan Tilque (who is not important right now), Joshua,
and Jason.

The same plot summary also describes the 1957 movie "Zero Hour!" with
Dana Andrews, Sterling Hayden, and Linda Darnell, which "Airplane!"
was a parody of. But you were given both the date and the principal
cast, so it should have been clear which one was wanted.

A still earlier version was "Flight into Danger", starring James
Doohan, shown in 1956 as part of the Canadian-made TV series
"Encounter" or "General Motors Presents".

> 4. 2005. A bereaved woman and her daughter are flying home
> from Berlin to America. At 30,000 feet, the child vanishes,
> and nobody will admit she was ever on the plane. (Jodie Foster,
> Peter Sarsgaard, Sean Bean.)

"Flightplan". 4 for Jason.

> 5. 1997. Hijackers seize the plane carrying the President of the
> United States and his family, but he -- an ex-soldier -- works
> from hiding to defeat them. (Harrison Ford, Glenn Close,
> Gary Oldman.)

"Air Force One". 4 for Dan Blum, Bruce, Dan Tilque, Joshua,
and Jason.

> 6. 1970. A bomber on board an airplane, an airport almost closed
> by snow, and various personal problems of the people involved.
> (Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, George Kennedy.)

"Airport". (Yes, the answer was in the question. But how else to
write it?) 4 for Bruce, Dan Tilque, Joshua, and Jason.

This was based on a novel by Arthur Hailey, who also wrote "Flight
Into Danger" and coauthored "Zero Hour!"

I was amused by the wrong answer "Airport '77", which was one of the
sequels. (And does not count as "almost correct" since it was a
different movie.) Oddly enough, that one was made in 1977, not 1970.

> 7. 1992. An airline security expert must take action when he
> finds himself trapped on a passenger jet after terrorists seize
> control of it. (Bruce Greenwood, Tom Sizemore, Wesley Snipes.)

"Passenger 57". 4 for Calvin, Joshua, and Jason.

"Snakes on a Plane", duh. 4 for everyone -- Erland, Dan Blum, Bruce,
Calvin, Dan Tilque, Joshua, and Jason.

> 9. 2014. An air marshal springs into action during a transatlantic
> flight after receiving a series of text messages demanding
> $150,000,000 sent to an offshore account, or someone will die
> every 20 minutes. (Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong'o.)

"Non-Stop".

> 10. 1997. About-to-be-paroled former US Ranger Cameron Poe finds
> himself trapped on a prisoner-transport plane when the other
> prisoners seize control. (Ving Rhames, John Malkovich,
> Nicolas Cage.)

"Con Air". 4 for Dan Blum, Joshua, and Jason.
