A quickie.

What was the first pro sports arena/stadium/field to be given a name because a
company paid for their name to be on it, ie: The FleetCenter - named 'cuz
Fleet Bank paid gazillions of dollars to get their name there. Not named 'cuz
the team owner also owned a business, ie: Wrigley Field.

3Com Park? (was Candlestick Park)

Interestingly enough (a side note, even if I'm wrong) it won't likely be
3Com Park for long. I believe they leased the name for a year or two,
then it will be on the market again for some other co. to pick up.
That's marketing at its finest...

Actually, according to what was posted to the 49ers mailing list last
season the 3com name is already gone. I think they only rented it for a
few months.

I response to the question, I'm not sure, but even the United Center in
Chicago, home of the Bulls, sponsored by United Airlines, has been named
longer than 3com was.

Again, not sure, but my first thought was the Target Center in
Minneapolis. I thought the Timberwolves have played there since
the franchise started, which must be four or five years now.

I also think the Forum in LA changed it's name to the Great Western
Form (paid for by Great Western Bank) about that same time...maybe them?

AmericaWest Arena (Phoenix) and the Delta Center (Salt Lake City) go back
farther than this recent renaming of Candlestick Park, and even those are
fairly new.

I believe Arco Arena (Sacramento Kings) was named sometime around 1985.

Good try, Scott, but this structure goes back to way before the Timberwolves
existed...and also was given the name when it was under construction.

It still stands, and is being used, but no longer has the corporate name
attached to it.

Schaefer is the one beer to have when you're having more than one.

Good Start...but the theme was 4-6 lines long, in total.

Let's see if anyone remembers the whole thing.
