Brilliant question! I walked right into the trap.

...but the answer could have been Viedma. (To wit, in the 1980s, President
Alfosín floated an idea to move the federal captial to Viedma, which is
just on the border to what counts as Patagonia. Not much happened out of it,
though.)

Whereas I cleverly evaded the trap that Erland walked into, and walked
right into the *other* one. I knew that from a past email discussion
that small-scale maps are often misleading[1] as to which of Buenos
Aires and Montevideo is farther south, but forgot which relative
position was false and which was true.

[1] When a city is on the coast, the dot used to represent it on a map
is normally placed fully inland rather than centered on the coastline.
Since Montevideo is on a south-facing coast, this pushes its dot north.
If the map is small-scale enough, this can makes it look farther north
than Buenos Aires.

Not sure what you mean. I answered Santiago, as I seemed to recall that it
slightly south of Buenos Aires. Montevideo I did not even consider, and
when I saw people entering I thought they were totally confused.

My mental picture of it all was that since Montevideo is across the river
from Buenos Aires it must be north from B.A.

You could of course say that I did two mistakes. First ignoring Montevideo
and then picking the wrong of Buenos Aires and Santiago. So, yes, you did
better than me.

This would probably be a bad time to admit that I got this correct by
guessing, right?

Santiago is the obvious answer because Chile is long and straight and
it doesn't make sense for the capital to be so far north, but it is, and
I cleverly knew that was wrong.

Whereas I knew that the relative position of those two on some maps looks
wrong, but I also knew that since Montevideo is across the river (estuary,
really) from Buenos Aires it must be farther north.

I'd say it serves us right!

Since I travellled through Chile from north to south two years ago, that
was not a trap I did not walk into. And even before that I had a clear
mental picture of Chile. Roughly, you can divide Chile into five sections,
not all of the same size: Sur Grande, Sur Chico, Central, Norte Chico, Norte
Grande. Sur Grande is basically the area that extends south from Puerto
Montt (not including the islands of Chiloé), and this is a quite a wild
area where the distance from the mountains to the sea is very short.

And if you exclude Sur Grande, Santiago is rather south of the middle
line. If you also exlucde Norte Grande (which was not in Chile before
1884), Santiago is in the middle.

However, while I have travelled in both Chile and Argentina, it is not
always easy to tell exactly what is on the other side due east/west from
where you are. The only reason you would how the two are located in
relation to each other is because you have looked it up before.
