The scores were in a preceding article - provided the artciels
arrived to you in order, which unfortunately does not always
happen.
The letters in parentheses are the codes from the score article
and tells who correctly answered artists, song and album. Lower
case indicates partial credit.
1) "The safety in numbers when you learn to divide"
Peter Gabriel - Not One of Us - Peter Gabriel(3)
(AMORU AORU AORU 5 4 4)
Sets the theme for the quiz...
2) "You got to move your feet to the trick of the beat. There is no elite"
Sniff 'n' the Tears - Driver's Seat - Fickle Heart
(FR FR R 2 2 1)
I had expected more people to get this one. It's was a single, and
at least over here quite popular. There was also a r.m.misc inquiry
about it recently, and the song seemed to be familliar. I got two
guesses on Chic on this one, which I have to admit is not illogical
to this quote, but alas not right.
3) "CPL539H"
Roxy Music - Re-make/Re-model - Roxy Music
(R R R 1 1 1)
Obscure? Well, yes, but it fits the theme. And it's a good song.
4) "Make sure your boyfriend's at least 21"
Tom Robinson Band - (Sing if You're) Glad to be Gay
(R - 1 0)
Hm, I expected to get at least some good guesses on this one. Or is
the connection to homosexuality too vaque? (21 is the age of conscent
for homosexual men in the UK.) The song originally appeared on an EP
called "Rising Free". At least in Canada, the EP was added to TRB's
debut album "Power in the Darkness" to make it a double.
5) "38
42
55
3"
Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays - As Falls Wichita Falls So Falls Wichita Falls -
As Falls Wichita Falls So Falls Wichita Falls
( 0 0 0)
OK, this one is totally outrageous. But it has the numbers, which
also are the only words in this 20-minute instrumental.
6) "Take this brother, may it serve you well"
"If he become naked"
The Beatles - Revolution #9 - The Beatles (White Album)
(IJKNQR IJKNQR IJKNQR 6 6 6)
7) "Be quiet big boys don't cry"
10 C.C. - I'm Not in Love - The Original Soundtrack
(CDFHOSRT CDFHOSRT R 8 8 1)
This one got more answers than I expected, because I seemed to recall
that the line is harder to catch than actually is the case. If you
missed it: this is what the female voice whispers in the middle section.
But people had problems with the album. I had several proposals, but only
The Ducth Officials got it right.
8) "It's a fine line between living and being alive"
Scatterbrain - Fine Line - Scamboogery
(LQ - Q 2 0 1)
A song from a very recent album by not too well-known heavy metal (but
very untypical) band. But I think the quote is worth its place in it-
self. And Xian the Drive and The First Easterners seemed to at least
know about it, even if they didn't nail it down completely.
9) "You both stand there, your long hair flowing,
Eyes alive, your minds still growing, saying to me:
'What can we do now we both love you?' I love you too"
Jefferson Airplane - Triad - Crown of Creation
(S S - 1 1 0)
Hm, another too obscure? Well, maybe. This song was written by David
Crosby, but his group, The Byrds, found this song with the chorus line
"I don't really see, why can't we go on as three?" a bit too strong.
But thankfully Jefferson Airplane adapted this delicated song.
10) "Better hope you don't run out of gas"
Ry Cooder - Down in Hollywood - Bop 'til You Drop
(R R R 1 1 1)
Now, don't tell me this song is unknown!
11) "26. My baby's a 26. On a scale from one to ten, my baby's a 26."
Chic - 26 - Real People
(MR - - 2 0 0)
Taking a non-single track with artists like The Beatles or Yes is
probably not very questionable, but doing so with a group like Chic
is not very nice with the quiz solvers. But, hey, this line is so
far out. And it has its saftey in numbers...
12) "The aliens have to take a physical form on our planet -
so why not one with 13 channels?"
Joe Jackson - The T.V. Age - Night & Day
(R R R 1 1 1)
Another non-single track. Maybe I expected Joe to be more popular.
13) "Ik heb getwijfeld over Belgie"
Het Goede Doel - Belgie (is er leven op Pluto) - Belgie
(AEKLOSRTU sRT RT 9 2.5 2)
Ah, this was fun. Many entrants realized that the quote in Dutch
belonged to the Dutch name in the list. Had The Dutch Officials
entered indivudually we would also have seen good statistics for
the title and the album. "Belgie" was huge hit for Het Goede Doel
in The Netherlands 1982.
The naive translation of the line for a Swede would be "I have
been in doubts over Belgium" (be in doubt = "tvivla" in Swedish),
but given context I would assume "been considering" is the correct
translation of "getwijfeld", since the singer sings of the many
places where he can't go, but Belgium seems to be an option although
he also asks whether there is life on Pluto (is er leven op Pluto).
The Dispossessed tried with "Do the Beglie" which they got half
credit for. T is The Atlantic Connection, which is a Dutch Team.
14) "63 62 61 60 59 58"
Mannfred Mann's Earth Band - Angels at my Gate - Angel Station
(CK CK CK 2 2 2)
Even more weird numbers. I have never understood what they do in
the song, although there is a line "numbers in the air".
15) "You're invited to join the procession.
There is someone I like you to meet."
Bachman Turner Overdrive - She's an Angel - Four Wheel Drive
(KR KR KR 2 2 2)
Another non-single track which could be questioned. But this line
has always had some meaning to me.
16) "There was a holy United Nations
Just sitting in the ground
Fifteen million years ago."
The Alpha Band - Interviews - The Alpha Band
(- - - 0 0 0)
A complete stumbler. Doesn't anyone read my reviews? :-) Cannot
really convince my conscience that this one was unexcusable. I did
learn to know it from the radio many years ago.
The most well-known person in The Alpha Band is probably T-Bone
Burnett.
17) "A band is blowing dixie, double four-time"
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
(CDFGJLMNOPQSRTU CDFGJLMNOPQSRTU DFGJMNOSRUT 15 15 11)
The best known song. Not surprising.
18) "Respectfully I say to thee I'm aware that you're cheating"
Diana Ross - Upside down
(CDGLOQSRU CDGLOQSRU 9 9)
The only pop/rock song I know which uses thou/thy/thee/thine to address
another person. (To get a rhyme with respectfully.) I know a few where
it's used for deities or birds (Roxy Music's "Nightingale".) And of
course, there is plentiful in Steeleye Span's material, but that's
lyrics from passed centuries.
19) "The first cut won't hurt at all, the second only makes you wonder"
Propaganda - Jewel/Duel - A Secret Wish
(GRT R RT 3 1 2)
"Jewel" and "Duel" are actually two songs, or rather the same song
in two versions, one rough and one smooth, appearing on the same
album. You only had to give one of the titles.
20) "Washington D.C. three million people"
The Archies - A Summer Prayer For Peace
(- - - 0 0 0)
No, I am not ashamed for this one. Maybe it was in the wrong quiz, and
should have been in the Golden Oldies Quiz instead. The song is from
1969 and was a hit in Sweden at least. (A very sappy thing. They
enumarete a lot of places and their population, and then in the
chorus line they tell that all should go together in a summer prayer
for peace. Yeech. I confess owning the single, but I was only nine
then...)
21) "You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world.
I'll give you anything everything, if you want things."
Pink Floyd - Bike - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
(AEIKPRU KpRU KPRU)
Another favourite line of mine.
22) "With a boulder on my shoulder, feeling kind of older,
I tripped the merry-go-round"
Bruce Springsteen - Blinded by the Light - Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ
(DJNOSRU BCDJLNOSRU DOSR 7 10 4)
Not only I make difficult quizzes. I'm nasty too. Three persons
walked right into the trap and answered Mannfred Mann's Earth
Band whose version of this song is the more famous one. But I
always ask for the original appearance, so Bruce Springsteen is
the only possible answer. Actually I expected even more persons
go wrong here, but the song was discussed recently in r.g.trivia,
which might have been a help.
23) "Girls best friend are diamonds, man's best friend is dog.
Now what does that tell you?
It does say much, don't say much about dog"
The Golden Palominos - Diamonds - Blast of Silence
(- - - 0 0 0)
This is a quote I can regret. The song as a whole is fun, but the quote
loses some effect out of context.
24) "But boy could he play guitar!"
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust - The Rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and
The Spiders from Mars
(ACDJKLMNOQRSU ACDJKLMNOQRSU ACDJKLMNOQRSU 13 13 13)
The second best known song, and the best known album. Not a surprise.
25) "Dream child in my head, a nightmare born in a borrowed bed"
10.000 Maniacs - Eat For Two - Blind Man's Zoo
(BOSU BOSU BOSU 4 4 4)
A line from a good song about being pregnant after a one-night stand.
26) "Why are we fighting for this? Why are you paying for this?"
Midnight Oil - Jimmy Sharman's Boxers - Red Sails in the Sunset
(LMRF MR MR 4 2 2)
From my favourite Midnight Oil album.
27) "Ooka-chacka ooka-chacka ooka-ooka-ooka-chacka"
Jonathan King - Hooked on a Feeling
(R CHpSR 1 4.5)
I had expected more people to get this song right. Or did you think
that since Blue Swede was not on the list, it must be from another
song? But let me tell you that Blue Swede could never be on the list
for this one. The name Blue Swede was invented solely for the American
market. The original record said Bj|rn Skifs ("|" = dotted "o") who
is still a popular artist in Sweden.
However, the story of "Hooked on a Feeling" is much longer. I don't
know who originally recorded it in 1961 or so, but I saw it credited to
B.J. Thomas in a recent quiz, so it might have been him. But the "Ooka-
chacka" chant was invented much later, namely by the king of bubble-gum
pop, Jonathan King. Skifs covered his version one or two years later,
and as Blue Swede he was the first Swedish act to go #1 in the US.
Someone of The Dutch Officials knew it was Jonathan King, and I have
to say I'm quite impressed.
28) "The storm' is growin' The sky is lookin' strange
Cold, cold wind keep blowin' Whoa, that's the winds of change"
Firefall - Winds of Change - Elan
(- ADL - 0 3 0)
Now, this was interesting. No one got the group right, but three
had the title right (with guesses on Midnight Oil and Jefferson
Airplane). But in a way very fitting. You see, Firefall was an Eagles
look-a-like group and not very original. And this particular track
is so full of cliches. When I played it for a friend of mine, his
comment was: "There is not a single note in this song which hasn't
been written before!"
29) "But if it wasn't for that surgeon's skill,
you'd be three times a mother."
Metro - Flame - Metro
(S - S 1 0 1)
I don't think The Dispossessed knew this one, but just got a random
guess right. Metro only made this record (well, there is a second one,
but the personnel is not the same) which is very delicate. The lyrics
seems to come from a decadent world, or what do you think about the
sample above. Bowie covered their "Criminal World" on his "Let's Dance"
album.
30) "There's safety in numbers and numbers don't lie"
Crack The Sky - Safety in Numbers - Safety in Numbers
(- - - 0 0 0)
Another track too obscure? I figured that if you knew some about
Crack The Sky you could at least guess the album. Then again,
Crack The Sky is not the most well-known band around. Anyway,
the quote takes us back to the theme of the quiz.
