These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2014-12-07,
and should be interpreted accordingly. If any answers have changed
due to newer news, you are still expected to give the answers that
were correct on that date.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Unnatural Axxxe, and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see
my companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition
(QFTCI*)".

** Final (2014-12-08), Round 1 - Current Events

This round covers the past two weeks.

* Public Affairs

1. New mayor John Tory announced not only his deputy mayors but
also three additional, unofficial deputy mayors, who will
"ensure geographic representation". Name *any one* of the four.

2. Former Governor-General Michaëlle Jean will be leading what
international organization?

3. A New York grand jury didn't indict a police officer whose
chokehold may have killed an unarmed black man. On videotape,
the victim gasped a phrase that has "gone viral" in protest.
What did he say?

* Miscellaneous

4. King Richard III's remains were in the news, 2 years after
being dug up in a parking lot, when they revealed what?

5. NASA successfully launched and recovered a space capsule.
The test flight was unmanned but the capsule is eventually
intended for a manned Mars mission. Name the capsule.

6. An Italian historian sparked controversy by speculating that
the Mona Lisa portrays da Vinci's mother Caterina, who he
further speculates was of what nationality?

* Sports

7. The Toronto Raptors are off to a great start, but they lost a
star player for at least a month due to a groin injury. Who?

8. Canadian football had two championship games, the Vanier Cup
for universities and the Grey Cup for the CFL. Give the full
name of either winning team.

9. The Blue Jays traded Brett Lawrie and prospects for last year's
AL All-Star third baseman. Name him.

* Business

10. Alberta premier Jim Prentice is promoting a proposed
$12,000,000,000 oil pipeline, including a meeting with Premier
Kathleen Wynne. What is the name of the pipeline?

11. The Bank of Canada announced it will keep its benchmark
"overnight rate target" unchanged -- at what interest rate?

12. Payday loan company Money Mart agreed to suspend its
controversial program of buying retailers' gift cards from
customers for cash. What percentage of face value were they
offering?

* Entertainment

13. A teaser trailer was released for a highly anticipated movie,
sparking an Internet fuss. A black actor was cast in a role
some apparently think is just for white men. What movie?

14. A new James Bond movie was announced. Either name the movie
or tell us who was cast as the villain.

15. And finally, today's Jian Ghomeshi question. The CBC
contravened its own policy by accepting $5,000 from a record
label to defray Ghomeshi's travel expenses -- to interview who?

The Current Events game for the recently completed season is over,
and, by a margin of 12 points, the winner is JOSHUA KREITZER.
Congratulations!

QFTCI Current Events will resume on about 2015-01-20.

Denzil Minnan-Wong (official), Vince Crisanti, Glenn De Baeremaeker,
Pam McConnell. 4 for Stephen.

Dan Tilque, Rob, Stephen, Peter, and Jason.

Infidelity. (Any reference to this was sufficient.) 4 for Peter.

Barring mutations, a man's Y chromosome is passed on identically to
his sons. But Richard III's Y chromosome doesn't match those of a
number of men descended through the male line from the 5th Duke of
Beaufort (1744-1803), although the duke was supposed to have been
a male-line descendant of Richard's. There is no data available
to say which generation the infidelity occurred in, but if it was
early enough, several past monarchs may not have been the legitimate
descendants of previous monarchs that they were supposed to be.
