Well, here is a quote from the head of XTR Inc. and publisher of
Command Magazine about why his wargame company has been hurting:

"The crisis we're in began in late 1994 when CCGs started draining
off hobby retailers' and wholesalers' monies. The next blow came in
1998-99 when video and computer games simply conquered the retail
home entertainment market. "

So I think you are right that computer games played a part, but CCGs
are what really did the damage in the mid 90s. Direct sales were a
response to the impact of CCGs on the hobby distribution system in
1994-95.

In any case this is off-topic for this list so I will stop posting
about it. It would be a shame if there were no more Mythos but at
least we got a lot of good Mythos products out of the whole CCG thing.

I am curious if most Mythos players are/were CCG players who wanted
to try a different CCG, or whether they are/were Lovecraft fans who
had no particular interest in Magic, L5R etc. but were willing to buy
a Lovecraft-oriented CCG.

wasn't into Lovecraft at the time - but I had friends into either or both,
and this CCG looked interesting. It didn't inspire me to play many CCGs (I
play Mythos, Doomtown, INWO, and Age of Empires) but it did inspire me to
finally read Lovecraft's writings.
