I don't know about the rest of you, but I am very interested to read of the
why's and wherefore's involving mythos. I would be willing to help
ressurect it. I doodle, and could be able to supply some artwork, even for
an on-line expansion.

I am a little of both. I liked to play magic and I was a fan of lovecraft,
so when I saw mythos I loved it immediately. I never played CoC, but I read
many of his stories and bought a few comic adaptations of them. Some of
these were very well done. monty.

The second one (in my case, anyway). I'm a Lovecraft fan and a wargamer,
so I viewed CCGs with disdain, though when I heard "Mythos" was in the
making, I decided that I'd give it a try (I also roleplay and am a fan of
Chaosium products, so I figured that it would be a well-designed game, and
am happy that it indeed is).

I was a bit of both. Primarily a lovecraft fan but also a ccg player. At the
time I was big into Magic and looking to play a new game. And lo and behold
along came Mythos.

Still hangin in for that next expansion

On the subject of PC games vs. rpgs etc..

In the UK, Eurolog has for some time been organising conventions in which
both play a complimentary role. In the Eurolog area at cons you will find
table top wargames, board games, rpgs and PC Lans all sitting next to each
other, there will probably be some CCGs as well.

We try to encourage the diversity of gaming and also by bringing the
different 'systems' together we encourage some cross-pollenation of players.
For exmaple, this year we will be running Diablo II on the PCs next to
Diablo D20 D&D games - you tried it on the PC now try it on the rpgs..etc.

We will be doing something similiar when Atlas brings out the Rune rpg to
compliment the PC Rune game. And we will most definately be doing the same
when the CoC PC game - Dark Corners of the Earth - is released.

My first glimpse of Mythos was in 1996 when it appeared in a catalogue as an oncoming product. It was described as a "Cthulhu-CCG". I played Mtg at the time but I was a great fan of Lovecraft and thought that a Cthulhu-style card game would be great. So when it became available I just had to get it. Later on Mtg faded away because Mythos replaced it. Mtg's fantasylands were never my thing. Lovecraft's fiction had a much stronger grasp on me. Nobody said it would be easy, though. Here in Finland, Mythos players are/were -very- rare, while Mtg seems as popular as everywhere.

I was/am a CCG player who tries different games when the local game store
has
demo nights for them (not all CCGs, either). I'm not fond of horror (not
even H. P.'s
writing) or of RPGs (which you didn't mention but some people could be
CoC players
that heard about a CCG). Mythos simply was and is the most enjoyable and
fun CCG
that I've ever played.

I thought Magic was a terrible game when it came and didn't like the
fact that you had to spend loads of money to have a chance in
games. But then came Star Trek TNG CCG, which I bought because I liked how
it played and also liked SF. That game made me a Star Trek-fan, I was
only mildly interested before playing the game. Then came Mythos and
it had a game-play similiar to an idea that I had when Magic came, so
naturally I liked it. I also play the Call of Cthulhu RPG so I like
the mythos, even though I haven't read any novels even now. =/ The
third CCG I play (played) is Rage, the werewolf-game which I like
because it's so fast paced and I like some game functions in it, like
mooting.

(wakes up from a long lurk)

I'd read a lot of Lovecraft and played a lot of RPGs, and Mythos was my
tentative entry into the CCG thing. I bought a lot of CCGs and in the end
the entire thing pissed me off immensely. I'm attempting to sell off the
remnants of my L5R stock and the MECCG stuff will be the next to go.
Mythos will stay because it is the best of the bunch by a long way (for a
number of reasons - theme, rules, accessibility and collectability),
but the CCG model is deeply flawed unless you are WOTC. I had way more fun
playing CoC for a bit last year thanI did with any CCG, and it was a lot
cheaper (2nd hand 2nd ed CoC rulebook!). I fully understand Chaosium's
desire to focus on rulebooks and literature.

I've not played a CCG in over 2 years now, though recently I was thinking
of putting one of my Dreamlands decks back together :) A move away from my
gaming group didn't help (hi Danny), and I now write computer games for a
living rather than dreaming up Mythos decks during slack periods at
university, so make of that what you will.

I am trying to get a Mythos game together this weekend. What do you
feel is the optimal number of players? I have played with up to 5 but
with this many it can be hard to get things done due to the number of
events people can play that affect you.

Actually, that may be one of the reasons you games take so long and seldom
finish with 20 points of adventures. Our group very seldom includes events
that aren't necessary for the adventure, except for "defensive" events
(Ythian Mental Contact, etc.).

In answer to your question, I think the optimum number of players is 4 - but
have played with anywhere between 2 and 10 players.
