I'm still looking around the area here waiting the games
arrival, and I was wondering if I can get a card list? Can anyone
help me? http://www.xxxenophile.com doesn't have one online either.
Thanks in advance

Changing my web page for your viewing pleasure and my educational experience!
Quick Note: With 3 boxes of boosters and about another box of
booster/starters between 3 people we had 5 cards that we only got 1 of,
and about 10 cards we only got two of. However the converse is true. Out
of one box of boosters I got six of some cards.... If you want a
complete collection, trade and play will be a necessity.
Helpful hint: My deck is composed of all the cards I have more than 3
of... That'll get rid of the things!!!!
= bonsai =
Am working on one, assuming the rulebook's correct when it says there's
exactly 270 cards in the set. [There seem to be; people around here _have_
the three or four cards I'm missing, but don't want to trade yet because
no-one but me bought enough yet to have duplicates of the specific ones I
want. I expect this to change.]

James Ernest has promised to put something on the web site when he
gets a chance, although it may not have the full card data.
In other news, there were around 90 cards cut from the game during
testing, *after* the art was finished. Nene Thomas was surprised to
discover that she only had one card in the set. My guess is that many
of those cards will be revised and included in an expansion set.
> I'm assuming it will also eventually have a FAQ.
There's a stub of an FAQ on the web site, and a place for errata (of
which there is one so far).
> Quick Note: With 3 boxes of boosters and about another box of
> booster/starters between 3 people we had 5 cards that we only got 1 of,
> and about 10 cards we only got two of.
Add another half-box of starters, and you'll have opened the same
number of cards as I have, from which I got three complete sets and
most of a fourth. Even with what you're missing, it sounds like you
got a pretty good distribution.
>If you want a complete collection, trade and play will be a necessity.
More correctly, if you want a complete collection without buying
around 1000 cards (retail price: $150), you'll have to trade. Play can
only improve your collection if, like Ken, you don't play with any of
the cards you have just one of.

OK, I have a question on how the Nuclear Powered Vibrator works.
When you pop it and put it in your toybox, you now need 10 more points to
win. Is that 10 more from what you need to win, or 10 more from what you
have when it goes in your toybox? I thought it was the former, but my
girlfriend pointed out that it can also be read the other way. So, which
is correct? Anyone?
Thanks,
Izzbot (izz...@eskimo.com)
You now need 10 more points than your previous victory conditions,
so if you needed 100 before, now you need 110. This is one of the Bad
Gizmos (like Plot Device) which hurt you. If it meant the other version,
it would say something like "You win if you score 10 more points after
putting Nuclear Powered Vibrator in your toybox."
Dave Van Domelen, the "10 more and you win" version would be SO
hosey that it'd break the game....
Well, does this mean that the number of cards isn't 270? I forget
whether I saw that number on the web site or if it was in the rulebook. I
seem to have about 217 of them, and I've only gotten 2 decks and 15
packs.
Favorite card art: Laurie the Lab Assitant.
Favorite card effect: The aphrodesiac ("Physically destroy this card to
take another turn")
Favorite card idea: The Fodunk card.

: You now need 10 more points than your previous victory conditions,
: so if you needed 100 before, now you need 110.
To reinforce Dave's point, compare this card to one of my faves,
"Your Own Apartment". It reads something like Any players who
still live with their parents need 10 more points to win; I might
have mis-remembered a word or three, but I do recall it uses that
same "10 more points to win" template as the Nuclear Powered Vibrator.
And clearly the "Your Own Apartment" card is meant to penalize
those players who still live at home.
Btw, if you look carefully at the art on that card, it looks
like some very interesting things have been going on in Your Own
Apartment...interesting devices on the table and so on...Now pardon
me while I crank up the NPV to the "Oh Lordy!" setting.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!
Look at it this way, if your girlfriend is right and it means "get another
ten points and you win", then it would be impossible to win if you have the
card in your toybo (and active), because no matter what your score is, you
still need ten more points.
Matthew Kudzin
mku...@mail.sas.upenn.edu
P.S. Personally, I like this interpretation, even if it isn't what was
intended.
Sorry for any confusion. The number of cards *after* the cut is 270.
There were exactly enough cards dropped to have been another press
sheet. In an e-mail exchange, James Ernest basically shot down the
conjecture that those 90 cards would ever appear in their current
form, so there won't be an instant expansion set.
>Favorite card art: Laurie the Lab Assitant.

J Greely (jgr...@synopsys.com)
English is a terrible language, innit? This is sort of like the Magic
card that originally read "opponent loses next turn". Unfortunately,
the picky details don't address this issue, so we're left with common
sense and the anguished screams of James Ernest. Compare the wording
of the following cards:
Naked City (Setting)
All players need five less points to win.
Nuclear Powered Vibrator (Gizmo)
You need ten more points to win.
Your Own Apartment (Setting)
All players who live with their parents need ten more
points to win.
The most sensible thing seems to be that these cards all affect the
total number of points needed to win. Naked City is a good thing for
everyone while it's in play, while Your Own Apartment is a bad thing
for certain players until it gets popped. I would say that the intent
is to make the game run longer for a player with a Nuclear Powered
Vibrator. Sort of like the Energizer Bunny...

J Greely (jgr...@synopsys.com)
Plot Device is a bad example, since it's a mixed blessing, and can
conceivably be used to your advantage in a Gizmo-heavy deck. Better
examples of Bad Gizmos are Cornelia's Double Bed and Three-Way Bulb.
--
J Greely (jgr...@synopsys.com)
Ten more from what you needed before it went in your toybox.
So, if you were both playing to 100 before, you are now playing to 110 while
opponent is playing to 100. [Think; if it were "You need only ten more points
to win" in interpretation, that would _always_ be true - because it works
the whole time it's in your Toybox .... and you'd always be ten points from
winning until you got it out of your Toybox...]
Here's one in the meantime, compiled entirely from cards I bought [or saw] -
I'm working on a spoiler list for my own use, and may put it on my Web page,
suitably attributed, if Phil&Co. are agreeable...

Dave "enjoy!" DeLaney
It would be best to list Gizmos and Setting together
before characters.
"Queen of the Moon" comes before "Queen of
Sheba" because of the "ignore the" rule.
"Helena Handbasket" probably comes before
"Helen Highwater" and "Le Petit Mort" probably
after "Leilani".
"50's Aliens who Dig Earth Women" might come
after "Felga Darkin".
Pedantically,
Jon.
Does anyone else think "Wet Blanket" is not
supposed to "contradict" any settings (gizmos?)?
Alright, you've riled the Librarian.
>"Queen of the Moon" comes before "Queen of
>Sheba" because of the "ignore the" rule.
The 'ignore the' rule usually only applies to articles at the
beginning of a name. Thusly, Queen of Sheba, then Queen of the
Moon.
>"Helena Handbasket" probably comes before "Helen Highwater"
Other way around. You'd list Helen before Helena.
>and "Le Petit Mort" probably after "Leilani".
Le would come before Leilani, so again, other way around.
>"50's Aliens who Dig Earth Women" might come after "Felga Darkin".
That's a flavor choice. I like all the numbers at the beginning,
but it's up to you. Just be consistent either way.
Jack Dracula
is a librarian
Might as well, since there are so few (36 of each). Since you asked so
nicely, I'll even post it that way...
>Does anyone else think "Wet Blanket" is not
>supposed to "contradict" any settings (gizmos?)?
Well, it contradicts Xanadu, but it comes first alphabetically, so
there's no problem.

librarian in XXXenophile? saving her for the expansion?)? The library
rule might only apply to leading articles, but the game rule (he says,
sniffing haughtily) is:
Ignore words like "The" and "A" when alphabetizing cards.
So not only does Queen of the Moon come first, but Le Petit Mort is
correctly filed under "P". Five points to everyone anal enough to have
caught that one.
Actually, it doesn't matter for the game, since the only cards for
which this could make a difference are:
Master of the Cyber-Geisha
Master of Tantric Sax
Queen of the Moon
Queen of Sheba
Queen of Tarts
None of their instructions conflict, so even if you pop all five of
these cards at once, the end result will be the same (modulo any of
the stranger gizmos).
>>"Helena Handbasket" probably comes before "Helen Highwater"
>Other way around. You'd list Helen before Helena.
My Pocket Webster's puts Helena (Montana) before Helen of Troy, so
even if we're ignoring "of", it should also come before Helen
Highwater.
>>and "Le Petit Mort" probably after "Leilani".
>Le would come before Leilani, so again, other way around.
[and he calls himself a librarian; hah! :-)]

The game changed the rules about the alphabet? How bizarre. The
only thing weirder I heard was the OnTE rule about odd numbers.
Anyways, I didn't know the rule because, well, I don't play XXXenophile,
and haven't bought any.

This one is true, from a vaguely objective standpoint. I just was
figuring thhem all as titles.

So does the state of Maryland. Who's wackier now?
Jack Dracula
your tax $$$ at work.

I would say that the implication is for leading articles only, since that is
the correct way (yes, I'm backing up the librarian.) As a matter of fact,
until you stated it this way here, there is no way I ever would've even
considered thinking about it as ignoring all articles; that seems
preposterous to me. I would think that the clarification was for the
benefit of those not familiar with the rule in the first place, and for
differentiating between things like "The Bard" and "Bob", (yes, I know
those aren't real cards... I just made up two names to prove a point) in
which case The Bard would come first.

You've got a very strange dictionary, friend. Are you sure someone didn't
switch your real dictionary with a fake one on April 1st?

Okay, I confess; I don't really care, but it's fun to lampoon the
usual Rules Lawyering that goes on for CCGs. I've lost count of the
number of Magic games that got bogged down because of someone reading
absolutely absurd things into the cards, and then having to jump
through equally absurd hoops to "prove" them wrong (leading me to
create the "Circle of Protection: Stupid Question" card for Tom
Wylie). There's a guy out there who's *still* convinced that a Tsunami
should destroy an Island of Wak-Wak, and will cheerfully argue for
hours with anyone who can't escape him.
The real point of my article was that not only could the rules be
taken to mean several different things, but that no matter how you
read them, it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference in the
game. None of the cards with "the" in the middle conflict with each
other, so no matter how someone chooses to define "alphabetically",
the results will be the same.
