They would have to have been in your hand at one point to be "return[ed] to
[your] hand". but I want to know about that graveyard trick. it would be some
nasty in a Black/Blue deck I am thinking of that is chock full of
Necrites,mindstabs and the like...

Actually, neither of the above cases are legal. In order for you to
return "target creature" to its owner's hand (or "target permanent"), it
must be one in play. If it is not in play, it is not a "permanent" for
the Boomerang to target (see definition of a permanent in Magic: the
Gathering) and a creature in the graveyard (or library) is not a
"creature". To explain the latter, let me draw your attention to the
card Animate Dead. Animate Dead states on the card that you choose a
target creature in the graveyard and bring it into play. It is also an
"Enchant Dead Creature". This means that a creature in a graveyard is
considered a "Dead Creature" rather than a "Creature" and therby can be
targeted by spells which target "Dead Creatures", but not by Unsummon,
etc. that target a "Creature".

We're only about 100 cards from having information for every card in
existence and we expect to be done by the end of this weekend! Come
check us out!

Boomerang says "return target PERMANENT to your hand." A Permanent is a
card in play. Cards in hand, library, or graveyard are not Permanents.
Unsummon targets a creature. Creatures in the Library or Graveyard are
"just cards" All the cards (Animate Dead, Raise Dead, etc) that can
extract creature cards from the graveyard specifically mention the
graveyard, although they could be worded better (as could Unsummon).
Any 10-year old who tries to unsummon a creature in the graveyard should,
in my opinion, be allowed to do it only once, as a reward for being
devious of mind.
