Theres a lot of good zombie cards out there right now and I've gotten a lot
of them by chance. So I'm trying to put together a T2 legal zombie deck. I
have about $30 bucks to blow on rares and kind of want this to be the deck.
I'm a casual player but will go to some tournaments if I get this in shape.
The idea behind this deck is to get a bunch of Rotlungs on the scene making
a killer amount of 2/2 zombie tokens. I can sac my real zombies like
they're going out of style and just dredge/unholy grotto/patrician/grave dig
them up and put them down again. Early in the game, chumping with zombies
or regenning zombies should keep me going. The "win condition", I guess, is
reaching critical mass with zombies, dropping some removals, and attacking.
Also, I could win it outright with corrupt damage as long as the zombie wall
holds. Anyway, here's my proposed deck, comments after.

1x Visara the Dreadful
3x Aphetto Dredging
4x Rotlung Reanimators
3x Boneknitters
3x Cruel Revival
4x Corrupt
4x Duress
4x Simplify/Disenchant
4x Innocent Blood/Chainer's Edict
4x Gravedigger
4x Soulless ones

Total = 38

Lands:
1x Unholy Grotto (its all I have)
17x Swamp
4x Plains/Forest

Total = 60
Here's some notes
Visara: I have one of her, so I'm throwing her in
Aphetto: Get those zombies out and back into play
Rotlung: They're basically the key to the deck
Duress: About the only control I have available
Soulless Ones: These seem like an obvious choice for a zombie deck
Corrupt: For a monoblack deck, corrupt can be a great finisher or even basic
creature removal
Chainers/Innocent: I can't decide which one, they're both such great
choices. There are two advantages to innocent: first, saccing a zombie can
actually net me more than 1 zombie, and second, if I have one in my hand
after the upheaval/tog combo I'm not dead! Chainers has got flashback.

Here are ones I'm shakey about:
Gravedigger: Opinions on a better choice? I think I might have enough
graveyard dredging
Boneknitters: I'm shakey on these guys. Do I actually WANT to regen my
zombies?
Cruel Revival: Creature removal + more zombie goodness. Maybe too expensive
Simplify/Disenchant: after doing testing with a "beta" version of this deck
I've come to the conclusion that all black decks NEED a way to deal with
enchantments and artifacts. The second your opponent pops a COP or
engineered plague or other equally nasty enchantment you might as well
concede if you don't have the stuff to deal with it. However, opinions on
HOW to deal with enchantments appreciated, this seems like a weak way to me.

Lands
I'm not sure how many lands I need to splash to have a reasonable chance of
getting the card I need. Also I need some advice on non basic lands, I'm
not a tourney player so I don't keep up.

I'm looking at a way to fit in Nantuko Husk and maybe some other creature
sack things. Tokens *die* to a bounce, might as well have something to do
with them.

PLEASE GIVE ME ADVICE ON THIS DECK, AND ANY GREAT BLACK CARDS IN GENERAL
THAT I HAVE OVERLOOKED. TIA!

1) Turn off your damn HTML, *NOW*.

2) How many answers do you think you're going to
get when you're posting black text on a black background?

Agh! black on black! But thanks for replying anyway. I've actually
considered patriarch's bidding instead of aphetto, but I have a few reasons
why I'd rather have aphetto. First, I find that the game tends to end
before the all vs three advantage of patriarchs really starts to show. I
rarely have more than 4 zombies in my graveyard, they're either phettoed or
grottoed out. Once that advantage is taken away, the disadvantage that the
other guy gets to reuse his creatures (beast/cephalid/soldier decks love
you, but even a single important card like a visara etc can make the
difference as to who's gonna win) makes patricians seem mediocre. Add on
the extra B and I've never found patricians to be worth it. I'd rather use
that extra B to reuse a creature with Unholy Grotto or play an innocent
blood. Anyway, here's a revised deck using oversold cemetary (nice) and
deathmatch (nice). How does your deck deal with COPs and Engineered Plagues
and other stuff like that?

1x Visara the Dreadful
4x Rotlung Reanimators
2x Boneknitters
4x Soulless ones
2x Shepard of Rot
2x Zombies of some sort...maybe carrion wurms
15

3x Aphetto Dredging
2x Oversold Cemetary
2x Death Match

4x Corrupt
4x Duress
4x Simplify/Disenchant
4x Innocent Blood/Chainer's Edict

23

Total = 38

Lands:
4x Unholy Grotto
14x Swamp
4x Plains/Forest
----
Also, this deck seems like a good choice for cryptic gateway. Yes, the
creatures are small and don't cost a huge amount so they can be hardcast.
But often you're going to have a bunch of tokens sitting there not doing
anything. In those cases you can tap them and get out the more expensive
zombies for free and spend the mana on other stuff. I wish I could find a
way for more creature recurrence.

The problem is that you have few Clerics in this deck.
You could splash blue for Artificial Evolution, and cut white
(replacing disenchants with counters or bounce).

I apologize, most webtv users see a teal colored text on black
background. It's fairly legible, but I will change my text to gold, or
dark blue =-)

BTW, how do you get here without being on webtv? can someone email me
how they got here using a computer?

Do you *have* a computer, with a modem? If so, I
can give you instructions.

You shouldn't post here in HTML at all -- that means no colors
whatsoever. This latest post of yours is pure text, please keep it that
way. Usenet is a text-only zone.

This is a Usenet newsgroup. You can read it with any newsreader.
Netscape/Mozilla and Opera have newsreaders built into them...not sure
about IE. You could also read it using Google, with any web browser --

http://groups.google.com/groups?group=rec.games.trading-cards.magic.strategy

Newsgroups predate the world wide web. If you feel more comfortable
with web sites, there are plenty of Magic discussion sites out there you
might enjoy.

What you are posting to is usenet. As mentioned by Remus, it predates the
internet. You can post/read using a newsreader or via
http://groups.google.com.
Posts in HTML are usually not appreciated on usenet for several reasons.
Some people use older readers that don't support HTML (very well), some
people don't like downloading large messages for just a single comment, but
most commonly, it's just wrong. :-P
