I am considering the purchase of Shandalar. The demo works nicely on
my PC (486DX50) but the box specifies a 100 as minimum. Has anyone
experience with this game on a system slower than the reccomended
minimum? What do you think?

I tried on my 486dx100 with 20M Ram and it locked up the machine every
time. A friend ran it on a P100 with only occasional lock-ups.

Good Luck.

Well, it locked up my P100 with 64 MB Ram too, so I switched to a P100.
Now it's a bit better ;)

I originally put it on a 486/66 (have since upgraded the motherboard,
it's now a P90 equivalent) and had it lock up once every 3 weeks or
so.

It was ungodly slow, though. Come to think of it, it still is under
certain conditions. Such as when the total number of creatures in
play goes over 14.

If the demo works fine, then the game will probably be okay too.
Reports of lock-ups have *NOTHING* to do with processor speed,
it's mostly the sound/graphics cards that cause lock-ups. The
game will be slow, but playable, and it is a very good game.

Hi. I've been playing the Microprose game on a 486DX2/66 w/ 20mb ram for
almost two months now and have very few problems. The first week or so,
the game would freeze fairly often, but I messed around with my
configuration and I've only had 1 or 2 freezes since. It does run a
little slowly (I haven't seen it on a faster computer so I can't really
tell how slow), but it is definitely playable and I recommend it.

Here, here! Finally someone with a little common sense speaks up.
I've run it on two different machines, my old DX2/50, and my sister's
P166. The only lock ups were cause by the fact that I had DirectX 2.0,
and when I removed my sound card. With an upgrade to DX 3.0, and the
sound card in, it worked wonderfully on both machines, though it does
run terribly slowly on the 486. One thing to note, however, is that
the demo and the full-blown game are NOT the same program, as the demo
definitely ran much faster than the full game. I might recommend
getting
the upgrade patch to 1.1, and disabling your sound card, as it seems
to have made a large impact on the speed of the game.
