Several spells have as part of their costs a payment of life that
"cannot be prevented or redirected". My question is how long is this in
effect? Til the spell resolves, til the end of a phase, til the end of a
turn, etc. Does this restriction keep a player from benefitting from a
stream of life later in the game? Thanks for the help.

Forever. That is the definition of loss of life. You just lose the life;
you can't avoid this cost.

Uh...no. Stream of Life gives you new life. You can't use things which
heal and/or prevent damage to avoid loss of life, but you can always just
gain more.
