G'Day to all,

Quick simple (I hope) question...

What is considered a permanent? My guess is all creatures in play (not in
the graveyard), all enchantments, all artifacts, and all lands.

Thanks

If it's in play, it's a permanent. If it's in your hand, in the
graveyard, removed from the game, on the stack, in your library or otherwise
not in play (except maybe phased out, but phasing's weird anyway) then it's
just a card, not a permanent.

Yep. Cards and tokens -in play- are permanents. Cards anywhere else are
not permanents: spells being cast aren't, cards in your hand aren't, etc.

It works the other way too: artifacts, creatures, lands, and enchantments
only exist -in play-. Anywhere else they're just cards of the appropriate
type (or, for artifact cards, creature cards, or enchantment cards on the
stack, they're spells being cast). So something that affects "all creatures"
can only affect permanents in play ... because that's the only zone there
-are- any creatures in...
