Sorry; this is way off.
A mono artifact was originally designed as one that could only be used once
per turn. When the RV rules came out, it was redefined to tap when used (so
an untapping effect would allow you to use it a second time).
A poly artifact is one that can be used as many times as you can pay the
costs involved. Ashnod's Altar is an example of a poly artifact (sacrifice
a creature to add (2) to your mana pool) that doesn't need to be used in
response to anything.
A continuous artifact (at least this one was correct) is one whose effects
happen without any sort of activation--such as Black Vise, Winter Orb, or
Cursed Rack.
The difference *IS* important for playing purposes; a Rod of Ruin can only
be used if you can tap it. Ashnod's Altar doesn't have to be used in
response to anything. And so on.
