Supposedly Scourge will have a spell that counters triggered abilities.\

Stifle U Instant
Counter target activated or triggered ability.

Lee mentioned the other day that the Mandatory Card Draw was triggered.

It's interesting to note some other triggered abilities:

Madness. Half of madness (after you have removed the card from the game,
the "when you do, until you next pass priority" part) is a triggered
ability. Counter the Basking Rootwalla, or the Circular Logic, or the
Arrogant Wurm.

Astral Slide: "Whenever a player cycles a card, you may remove target
creature from the game. If you do, return that creature to play under its
owner's control at end of turn."

Comp Rules 313.1 "As the end of turn step begins, all abilities that
trigger "at end of turn" go on the stack. (See rule 404, "Triggered
Abilities.") The active player gets priority, then players may play spells
and abilities."

Can we keep that Exalted Angel from coming back into play?

Phage the Untouchable: "When ~this~ comes into play..." Looks like a
reanimator deck's dream.

Provoke is a triggered ability.

For the Type 1 Players:

Flanking
Rampage
Phyrexian Dreadnought
Phyrexian Processor - "As ~this~ comes into play, pay any amount of life..."
"Nope, I think it'll be 0/0"
Final Fortune: "Take an extra turn after this one. At the end of that turn
you lose the game. "
Triggered ability. RRU for an extra turn. hmm.
Echo
Lich - When it leaves play, don't lose the game
Fading
Cumulative Upkeep

Going on the theory that this card will in fact be worded as you've
presented it...

Yes, as described in Comprehensive Rules section 304.1.

Wow. Yes, it would do exactly that... I can see this confusing a *lot*
of people.

You mean, countering just the "return to play at end of turn" part? I
suppose so, as that delayed triggered ability goes on the stack, and
it *is* a triggered ability (just one set up by a different triggered
ability instead of just triggering off of something itself).

Yes, I think someone had mentioned this possibility before (on .misc,
perhaps?)

Yup. More ways to make your opponent think that you're cheating 'cause
they don't look triggered. But hardly overpowered to counter them for
that one time.

> Phyrexian Dreadnought
> Phyrexian Processor - "As ~this~ comes into play, pay any amount of life..."
> "Nope, I think it'll be 0/0"

Be careful, those aren't triggered. Dreadnought is a "If Phyrexian
Dreadnought would come into play, do stuff instead"... That's a static
replacement ability. The Processor lets you pay life as it comes into
play, again not triggered.

Triggered abilities begin with When/Whenever/At, or have a keyword
ability whose definition in the rulebook includes that, or is the
special draw step action.

More fun abilities to counter, yes.

> Lich - When it leaves play, don't lose the game

Well, as soon as it leaves play, its "You don't lose the game for
having 0 or less life." ability stops working, and your life total
became 0 when it came into play (although I suppose you could counter
that triggered ability as well).

But under most circumstances, as soon as Lich leaves play, you lose
the game (due to 0 or less life) before its leave play ability even
goes on the stack (never mind you having time to counter it). It would
probably only matter if you had more than one in play...

> Fading
> Cumulative Upkeep

Well, you'd only be countering those for one turn... They'd still
trigger on the next turn.

But there are definitely some interesting possibilities...

Yes, I did. =) And you can counter it, too, assuming that's Stifle's
correct wording.

Yes. While I'd like to see an Official Ruling on this (which we won't see
until after the card is previewed or the FAQ is out, I'm sure), I imagine
countering the madness trigger would leave the card in the removed from the
game until the end of the game (unless it was wished out, etc.).

Yes. It's a triggered ability (even tohugh it's worded oddly, as delayed
triggered abilities often are).

Carreful. This is a replcement effect from a static ability , not a
triggered ability.

> Phyrexian Processor - "As ~this~ comes into play, pay any amount of
life..."

Careful again. This is an "as", not a "at", "when", or "whenever". It's
static, not triggered.

I think all the rest of these can be countered. Note, of course, that is
only counters one iteration. The triggered ability will still trigger again
and will resolve that time (unless another Stifle is played) if the trigger
event occurs again.

Neat.

Yep; the only one that isn't controlled by any player.

Er, there are TWO triggered abilities in it; that one, and the one that
puts the card in the graveyard from RFG when you pass. Either or both could
be countered by something that just flat-out countered a triggered ability.
(The stuff we have so far only counters certain targetted triggered abilities,
so hasn't been able to touch Madness, Nightmares, upkeep costs, end-of-turn
triggers, etc.)

>Astral Slide: "Whenever a player cycles a card, you may remove target

Two triggered abilities here, one of which is delayed.

Sure. You can keep it from going in the first place too, but the second is
more effective if it's not YOUR Angel.

>Phage the Untouchable: "When ~this~ comes into play..." Looks like a
>reanimator deck's dream.

But her other abilities are also counterable, notice.

>Provoke is a triggered ability.

Right. So are Rampage and Flanking... Parallax Wave etc., the grandmother
of all Nightmares, also use triggered abilities.

>For the Type 1 Players:

>"Nope, I think it'll be 0/0"

Stop, cease, halt. This is in no way a triggered ability; doesn't start with
'when', 'whenever', or 'at'.

Notice that the second one is a delayed trigger created by the first one if
it resolves. Which should mean that the card will stay removed from the game
if the first trigger is countered.
