I understand that when a flying creature attacks, it cannot be blocked by a
non-flying creature.
However, if i am attacking with a non-flying creature, and my opponent uses
a flying creature to block, does the flying creature sustain damage, and
possibly get killed, in the block?

I believe it does, my daughter's boyfriend is teaching her that it does not.

Correct.

Yes, it does. The definition of Flying is: "When this creature attacks,
only creatures that have Flying may be declared as blockers of this
creature". That is the *only* thing Flying does by the rules
(it does interact with the rules text of many cards, but that, of course,
is dealt with on a case-by-case basis by looking at the card text).

You are correct, and your daughter's boyfriend is mistaken.

Correct. (Unless something odd is involved, such as Reach.)

Yep. Nothing about flying says "does not get dealt combat damage from
nonfliers". All flying is is "can't be blocked except by creatures with
flying, and/or creatures with reach".

>I believe it does, my daughter's boyfriend is teaching her that it does not.

He's wrong, to put it concisely. Nothing about flying prevents damage from
nonfliers. He's probably thinking "it can't reach high enough to damage it"
or some such, but the rules don't say anything about physical positions of
the creatures involved, or go into the gameworld physics of dealing damage.

Absolutely, it's just an ordinary creature in combat. It doesn't
randomly get a chance to avoid the damage. There are a whole bunch
of particular ways for a creature to avoid damage - protection,
or some redirection effect, for example - but nothing automatic in
the rules regarding flying.

> I believe it does, my daughter's boyfriend is teaching her that it does not.

Here are all of the rules pertaining to flying:

502.4. Flying

502.4a Flying is an evasion ability.

502.4b A creature with flying can't be blocked except by creatures
with flying and/or reach. A creature with flying can block a creature
with or without flying. (See rule 309, "Declare Blockers Step," and
rule 502.70, "Reach.")

502.4c Multiple instances of flying on the same creature are
redundant.

No mention of anything to do with damage.

There is one card that has flying and has automatic damage prevention:

Dawn Elemental {W}{W}{W}{W} Creature - Elemental 3/3
/ Flying
/ Prevent all damage that would be dealt to Dawn Elemental.

But as you can see, it's written out in full; it's not anything to do
with flying.
