OK....I have a question about the Prophecy card Thrive (Sorcery XG- Put a
+1/+1 counter on each of X target creatures)

Can the X target creatures be just one creature. In other words, can one
creature be targeted multiple times? Why or Why not?

Thanks,
Joseph

The X target creatures can be one creature if X is one. You CANNOT select
one creature multiple times as a target for a spell or ability, unless the
spell or ability specifically says so. Why? it's in the rulebook, and there
are some pretty abusing things to do if this rule weren't there.

no.

409.1c If the spell or ability requires any targets, the player announces
these. It can't be played unless the required number of legal targets are
chosen. The same target can't be chosen multiple times.

Like first turn mountain, Firestorm, toss 5 cards, target you 5 times,
you take 25 damage, I win? :)

No. No, it cannot. Because the rules say so; if you're choosing more than
one target for a targetted spell or ability at the same time, they all have
to be separate targets. 409.1c: "The same target can't be chosen multiple
times".

Yeah, that's the one I meant, but couldn't remember which the card name.
Thanks for telling though.
