My Question:

I have a land that is not a basic land type, can I use this land to gain one
mana like a regular land even though it has another abilities? I guess my
question is do I have to use the ability or can I use it like a regular
land?

Thank you

There are five basic land types: Plains, which produce 1 white mana when
tapped for mana; Islands (blue); Mountains (red); Swamps (black); and Forests
(green). Even the versions of these five that do not actually say something
like "TAP: Add 1 white mana to your mana pool" right on the cards (Unglued,
Masques, and Invasion are the only ones I know fo so far) have this ability.

Any land that is not one of these 5 is a non-basic land. Non-basic lands
say right on them what you can do with them. For example, Kor Haven says on it:

Tap: Add one colorless mana to your mana pool.
1W, Tap: Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt by target attacking
creature this
turn.

It does not say that you can tap it for colored mana. So, you can't get a
colored mana out of it merely by tapping it for mana. (There are spells and
abilities that would actually allow this to happen. But as far as a Kor Haven
by itself is concerned, no.)

If the non-basic land does not say anything about being able to be tapped
for mana, it can't (disregarding the spells and abilities that I mentioned
above).

Hope this helps, gavin

Non-basic lands will normally give you the
option of tapping for a mana (it will say whether that mana is colorless or has
a color) along with some special ability.
In the cases of those lands, you have the option of tapping for a mana or
tapping to use the other ability. You cannot do both
at once. Be aware also that there have
been many non-basic lands which have an
ability or a continuous effect, but cannot produce any mana at all (Maze of
Ith,
Halls of Mist, Glacial Chasm. etc., etc.).
So unless the non-basic land tells you that you have the option of tapping for
mana,
you cannot.

How would you know what kind of basic land you're supposed to
treat it as? You'd just be guessing. Only basic lands have a "built-in"
mana-generating ability. If the card's not a plains/mountain/swamp/forest/island
and doesn't say it counts as one of those either, then it'll only have
the mana-producing abilities listed on the card. If there aren't any listed,
then you can't get any mana from it.

If the land says it has an ability that'll give you mana, you can use that
ability. If the land does _not_ have any ability that gives you mana? Then
you can't get mana from it. [The -basic- lands get a mana ability from the
rulebook; nonbasic lands don't get any such abilities...]

You have to use the ability(abilities) listed. The basic lands - the
ones that just have a big mana symbol on them - get the appropriate
"Tap: Add <> to your mana pool" ability automatically; a land that
has its land type -changed- to be a basic land type gets this ability
(and loses its old ones). But other than that, lands only have the
ability or abilities listed on them. There -are- lands that have no
mana abilities at all - Oasis, Halls of Mist, Glacial Chasm, etc.
