> What happens if a first striker blocks a doublestriker?
They both have first strike, so they each deal damage in the first strike
step.
If both survive, the doublestriker then also deals its normal damage to
the other creature.
> do the first strike damage steps cancel each other out?
No.

?
No, there's still going to be a first strike combat-damage step and a regular
one after it. There'll just be two reasons to _have_ the first-strike step.
In the first-strike combat-damage step, both of them will assign their combat
damage, and when that resolves both will deal theirs to the other one.
In the regular combat-damage step, IF the double striker survived the previous
step (and if the first striker did also), the double-striker will assign, then
deal, combat damage to the first-striker. The first striker won't assign or
deal any damage.
(If either one gets killed by combat damage in the first-strike combat-damage
step, then there won't be an attacker AND blocker next step, so no combat
damage will get assigned or dealt, UNLESS the double-striker survived and has
Trample or has the Rhox power.)
The first-strike steps don't 'cancel out' - it's not a toggle that says "have
this step INSTEAD OF the regular one, except if you're already having one".
You may want to consult the rulebook and read about first strike and double
strike and the combat step.

Why would they? The first striker and doublestriker trade blows
in the first strike step. Then, if they both survive, the
doublestriker gets to hit again in the regular damage step.

NOTICE
Thank you for noticing this new notice
Your noticing it has been noted
And will be reported to the authorities
Combat damage happens in two steps. In the first strike damage step,
you assign all the damage from creatures with first strike and double
strike, then you can respond to that, then the damage event resolves
and creatures with lethal damage on them are destroyed.
In the second damage step, you assign damage from creatures that didn't
assign damage in the first strike step, and from creatures with double
strike. Then there's time for responses, and then the damage is
dealt.
In the case of a creature with first strike in combat against a
creature with double strike, both creatures get to deal damage in the
first strike step, and then if they both survive, the creature with
double strike gets another chance to deal damage in the second combat
damage step.
