Also, if you cast a creature with protection from blue, can you counter it
with counterspell? Does Protection only work once the creature enters play
or does it work as soon as the card leaves your hand?
-Daimos
No - it's not in play yet, it's just a creature spell. So none of its abilities
are working yet.
>so it stays in play?
It doesn't -get into- play in the first place. A Creature spell puts the
creature into play when it resolves; a spell that gets countered won't
resolve.
>Also, if you cast a creature with protection from blue, can you counter it
>with counterspell?
Yes; abilities only work while cards are in play (unless they could -only-
work somewhere else). A creature would have to say "<This> can't be countered"
to be uncounterable, since "countering" something can only be done while it's
on the stack as a spell.
>Does Protection only work once the creature enters play
>or does it work as soon as the card leaves your hand?
Only once it's in play.

Okay, the Drudge Skeletons _spell_ is on the stack.

No. It never makes it into play. The DS _spell_ gets countered, and goes
straight from stack to graveyard.

402.8. Abilities function only while the permanent with the ability is in
play unless the ability states otherwise.
EXAMPLE: Black spells and abilities can target a card with protection
from black when it's in a library or graveyard.
Protection does not state otherwise. In addition, a spell on the stack is
_not_ a permanent.
