Question 1: If a kickered Urza's rage is played targeting me, and I
have a Delaying Shield in play, I will not take damage from the rage
correct?
My thinking: Rage text states "can't be prevented" and Delaying
Shield is replacing the damage (because of the instead).
Question 2: The correct way to use Delaying Shield and not pay/lose
life is as follows:
Start my Upkeep Step
All triggered abilities on stack (Ie: Delaying Shield's pay or lose
life)
I get priority.
I magically bounce shield back to my hand, or destroy it, use Flicker
on it etc.
Assume nothing else if played.
Bounce or similar resolve; Shield goes to my hand/graveyard etc
Shield's ability resolves, no counters (and/or no card) therefore no
need to pay/loose life.
That is correct right?
Question 3: I can prevent damage before the Delaying Shield's ability
triggers correct?
Ie: Tap a Samite Healer to prevent a single point of damage, Delaying
Shield, never triggers because I was never dealt damage. Correct?
Question 4: What happens if I have two Delaying Shields in play?
My guess: Both get a delay counter put on them for each point of
damage.
Thanks!
The cards:
Delaying Shield 3W
Enchantment
Text: If you would be dealt damage, put that many delay counters on
~this~ instead.
At the beginning of your upkeep, remove all counters from ~this~. For
each delay counter removed this way, you lose 1 life unless you pay
1W.
Urza's Rage 2R
Instant
Text: Kicker {8}{R} (You may pay an additional {8}{R} as you play this
spell.) ; ~this~ can't be countered by spells or abilities. ; ~this~
deals 3 damage to target creature or player. If you paid the kicker
cost, instead ~this~ deals 10 damage to that creature or player and
the damage can't be prevented.
Flicker 1W
Sorcery
UD - Rare
Text: Remove target nontoken permanent from the game, then return it
to play under its owner's control.
Samite Healer 1W
Creature - Cleric
Text: 1/1. ; {Tap}: Prevent the next 1 damage that would be dealt to
target creature or player this turn.

Right. Since there are no counters to remove on resolution you don't
have to pay anything

Since there are two effects that attempt to replace the same effect,
the player that is affected or the controller of the card that's
affected by the effect that will be replaced chooses which replacement
will take place

No (look above). If you'd be dealt 10 damage then you will divide 10
delay counters as you please between the 2 shields

>Question 1: If a kickered Urza's rage is played targeting me, and I

Correct. Delaying Shield's ability doesn't prevent damage, and so
Urza's Rage "cannot be prevented" clause doesn't help.
>My thinking: Rage text states "can't be prevented" and Delaying

Exactly.

Yep.

Yep.

Correct.

No. An event can only be replaced once, so you pick which Delaying
Shield gets the counter(s).
Patrik Linell
Theoretical DCI level 1 judge (practicality in process)
Correct; DS doesn't prevent damage, it replaces it with 'put counters here
instead'.
>My thinking: Rage text states "can't be prevented" and Delaying
>Shield is replacing the damage (because of the instead).
Correct.
>Question 2: The correct way to use Delaying Shield and not pay/lose

Correct, except "is" and "lose".
>Question 3: I can prevent damage before the Delaying Shield's ability
>triggers correct?
It doesn't 'trigger'. It's a replacement effect. But you can order
prevention/replacement effects that are trying to apply to you, or to a
permanent you control, as you choose. So you can choose to prevent some
damage with an existing shield 'before' applying DS' shield.
>Ie: Tap a Samite Healer to prevent a single point of damage, Delaying
>Shield, never triggers because I was never dealt damage. Correct?
Correct. Except that DS doesn't 'trigger' off damage, it -replaces- damage.
(Trying to prevent or replace damage with an ability that triggered off
being dealt damage Wouldn't Work.)
>Question 4: What happens if I have two Delaying Shields in play?
Then each time you would be dealt an amount of damage, you choose which
shield applies 'first'; that shield's DS gets counters and the other gets
none.
Note that sinec DS doesn't specify "if you would be dealt damage from a
source", so if several sources damage you at once you have to pick one DS
or the other for all of them.
>My guess: Both get a delay counter put on them for each point of damage.
Nope. You pick one replacement-or-prevention shield that applies, and apply it;
then you check to see if any more apply and repeat if needed. In this case
it's not needed because the first DS' shield replaced all the damage.
