Who the hell buys stuff from Iguana's, anyway?

Okay, this has been bugging me for some time now, so I'm gonna rant about it.
Despite this newsgroup, I don't think that the average MAgic player is a
moron. Apparently, the store Iguana's, which advertises in the Duellist,
thinks this is the case. Witness their "Wizard's Menu" offer.
For those not in the know, the "Wizard's Menu" (Duellist #12, page 15) is
a list of items you can select from. For about $30, you get 5 choices
from the menu. Since I can do math, I'll let you know that comes to $6
per choice. Here's some of the things you can get for $6:
60. 2 Netrunner booster packs
41. 1 Magic novel (apparently, their choice which one. Anyone know
the cover prices for these?)
46. 1 Out of print uncommon from Revised
48. 20 Foreign Magic commons (ooh! Commons for only 30 cents each!)
53. Baron Sengir. Before you get excited, he counts as TWO choices,
making him cost $12. Even InQest only gives him a 'high' value of
$10.
11. 1 Legends uncommon (a Mana Drain, no doubt)
25. 3 Star Wars Rares (Luke, Leia, and Vader, probably)
47. 200 soft card sleeves. (I buy mine for .75 per 100)
62.-64. Current issue of The Duelist, Scrye, or InQuest (these are 3
separate choices. Wow! You mean I can pay up to $2 over cover
price? Sign me up!)
29. 2 4E packs
22. 2 Chronicles packs
15. 2 Ice Age boosters (wow! 15 card boosters for the same price as
12-card boosters!)
40. Pack of 100 Deck Protector sleeves (again, counts as 2 choices. Why
pay $9 for these when you can pay $12?)
You get the idea. Granted, there are one or two "good" choices on the menu
(such as 4 Homelands packs) but this is how it works for the most part.
My question is, who falls for this stuff? Perhaps the fact that there is
no selection #1 means that Iguana's themselves have trouble with Math and
that's where the problem lies.
Keep in mind also that the fact that you get 5 choices is an "added
bonus" that's only available through October 31st. The $30 is really
only supposed to cover FOUR choices, and according to them the fifth
choice is "absolutely FREE" meaning you're actually paying $7.50 for that
issue of Scrye or those 2 Ice Age boosters.

hey i can get them for 1.50 a pack but this sounds like a good choice.

Think they were 5-5.50 or so and i bet the coupon/form for the send
away cards were cut out.

No, seriously now, I wasn't offended at all by the moron crack.
Perhaps I'm just too stupid to be upset :) Most of our posts here are very
informal, include misspellings, questionable grammar, ill-thought-out
ideas (see esp. my own posts :) and a considerable amount of
Much-Ado-About-Nothing posts (eg. FREE ATOGS!!!). .misc is like a coffee
shop in which some people are discussing Heidegger, and others Scooby-Doo.
Depending on what you read, you might walk away thinking the whole place
is filled with idiots (yep, the Heidegger readers. Do you really think I'd
insult the sacred idol Scooby?).
I, for one, like it this way. Sometimes other people make me look
better, sometimes I make other people look better. Often, I get info I
want, sometimes I read things that make me believe that there is
absolutely no positive correlation between computer literacy and overall
intelligence :)

As to Iguana's, I looked over their catalogue/list in the back of a Duelist,
and I'd pay for *some* of it. (Forget which, don't have a Duelist handy
right now.) But, I still agree that most of it is a ripoff.

here are idiots, and that those 90% of the people on this newsgroup
don't represent 90% of all magic players. I would tend to agree with
him. Surely you can't deny that from listening to the likes of nate
clarke, that guy posting the false 5th edition and visions list, the
endless flow of people supporting balduvian hordes and that crappy red
time walk, and all the hymn whiners, that you wouldn't think all magic
players are retarded.

Well said. Anyone who doubts that this is insulting can easily test it on
their own. The next time you speak to a group, break the ice with "You sure
seem like a bunch of idiots, but I know that's not true." Or walk up to your
boss and say "Although you give the impression that you're a total moron, I
know you aren't." See what reaction you get.

I thought that Iguana's menu of overpriced items was hilarious when it
first came out (I don't think too many people would fall for it). But,
you have to keep in mind that people love picking things off a menu.
Instead of just ordering 1 item off a list, they have to decide how they
are going to use up their 4-5 picks the most effectively. It gives
people a little challenge to see if they can pick the most expensive
items, and maybe in their mind, "screw the store" by getting more for
their money. In reality, the only person getting screwed is the
consumer, but that is the nature of business and free enterprise - can't
really complain about it unless you want to change the system...

A Magic book is $5.50 - $6.00. Of course, when I go to the local
bookstore, I don't have to pay shipping and handling. What a rip-off.
